Racers in Chicago New Year's Day vs Flames
12/30/2025 8:08:00 PM | Men's Basketball
The Murray State Racers carry a seven-game win streak into a New Year's Day game at UIC Thursday night in Chicago.
The 8 p.m. tip is a Missouri Valley Conference feature game and the sixth time the two have met since they came into The Valley together (with Belmont) in the 2022-23 season.
In those five meetings, the Racers have won all three at home, but have split in the Windy City with UIC winning last season in double overtime.
The Racers are 3-0 for the first time in the MVC with home wins over Drake and SIU and a road win Valparaiso.
MSU's 7-game streak is tied for the best currently in the MVC with Bradley.
MSU's win streak is  their first of five or more since 2022 when the team under Coach Matt McMahon won 21-straight when their season ended at the NCAA Tournament in a loss to Saint Peter's.
Thursday's game at Credit Union 1 Arena in Chicago marks just the 10th instance of playing on New Year's Day in 101 seasons of program history.
The Racers last New Year's Day excursion was on the road at Evansville in 2022 which turned out to be a 78 to 61 win in the MVC for the Racers. 19 years before that, in 2003, Coach to Tevester Anderson's Racers  hosted at beat Middle Tennessee 76-64.
One of Murray State most famous games was one that they actually lost. On Dec. 31, 1991 the Racers hosted Arkansas State under Coach Scott Edgar at old racer Arena and the game was billed as one that would be played in two different years. Tipping off at 11:30 PM, the first half of the game was played in 1991 and the second half was played in 1992! ASU won the game 63-59.
The first five MSU games on New Year's Day all occurred between 1943 and 1958, which included a win at home over Louisville under Coach Rex Alexander 75-61 in 1958.
