Racers Close Ole Miss Classic With Win

Murray State defeated Nicholls behind an offensive explosion that featured an Erin Lackey grand slam.
The Murray State Racers (6-9) defeated the Nicholls Colonels (7-13) 9-4 in their final game of the Ole Miss Classic on Sunday morning in Oxford, Mississippi
The Navy & Gold got off to an explosive start in the first inning. With the bases loaded, Erin Lackey fired a deep shot down the left field line for the Racers' first grand slam since the 2020 season and a 4-0 lead.Â
After a scoreless second and third inning, the Colonels got on the board in the fourth. Sydney Mann broke through to score their first run on a fielder's choice before Riley Rutherford and Laylin Sturm added an RBI single and RBI double to make it 4-3. Â
They added one more in the sixth, however, the Racers responded with a big inning of their own. Ailey Schyck got things going with her seventh home run of the season, a solo shot to right field. Taylor Franzen kept it going with an RBI double that scored Bailey Broemmer and then scored on an error on the next at-bat. Kenley Minor capped off a five-run inning with a single through the right side that scored two and put the Racers ahead 9-4.
The Colonels could not put up another run in the final inning, giving the Racers a 9-4 win.Â
Karlye Graber got the win in the circle, improving to 2-2 on the season and giving up just three hits in three and two-thirds innings. Erin Lackey led the team with four RBI coming via her first-inning grand slam. Kenley Minor added two more while Ailey Schyck and Taylor Franzen had on each. Parker Holcombe, Minor, Ava Ozment, Lackey, and Schyck all had one hit while Franzen led the Racers with two on the day.
Riley Rutherford led the Colonels with two RBI while Molly VandenBout and Carmella Muccilli had two hits each. Molly Yoo was the losing pitcher, going four and one-third innings and allowing two earned runs. Â
The Racers are back in action at 4 p.m. CT on Wednesday, March 5 for a midweek contest at Austin Peay before returning home to host the Racer Classic on March 7 and 8.
