
Racers Drop Doubleheader at Indiana State

MSU Returns Wednesday Against UT Martin
The Murray State Racers (9-18, 1-7 MVC) lost both games of a doubleheader against the Indiana State Sycamores (9-19, 4-1 MVC) in Terre Haute, Ind. on Saturday. Â
The Racers remain in eighth place in the Missouri Valley Conferece after dropping game one 9-5 and game two 16-3. Â
Game One:
The Sycamores got off to a strong start in game one, putting up four runs in the opening inning. The Racers were unable to respond until the third inning when Katy Huels got them on the board with a double to center field that scored Kenley Minor and Erin Lackey. Courtney Sandy added one more in the following inning to make the score 4-3, scoring on an RBI bunt single from Parker Holcombe after entering as a pinch running for Rylee Webb. Â
The Sycamores responded with one run of their own in the fourth and pushed the lead all the way to 9-3 with four runs in the sixth. Â
The Racers looked to rally in the seventh, scoring a pair of runs. However, the rally was not enough as the game ended with a final score of 9-5. Â
The Racers utilized five different pitchers on the day with the starter, Alyson Smith (0-1), taking the loss after allowing three earned runs. Cassi Newbanks got the win for the Sycamores pitching three and two thirds innings and allowing two earned runs. Â
Kenley Minor and Katy Huels each put up a pair of hits and Huels led the team with three RBI. Ava Ozment and Parker Holcombe each had RBI as well. Erin Lackey, Hannah Sutton, Rylee Webb, and Holcombe each has one hit. Â
Game Two:
The second game of the afternoon got off to a similar start as the first, with the Sycamores putting up six runs in the opening inning. They doubled down in the third with another six take a commanding 12-0 lead. Â
The Navy & Gold showed signs of life in the top of fourth as Summer Ray put them on the board off of a Rylee Webb walk before Erin Lackey scored two with a single up the middle to make the score 12-3. However, the bottom of the inning saw the Sycamores add another four runs before the Racers finally ended the inning with a double play. The Racers were unable to score in the fifth inning, giving the Sycamores a 16-3 run-rule victory.   Â
Six different Racers spent time in the circle as Bre Haislip (4-9) took the loss after pitching just just two thirds of an inning. Lauren Sackett (1-8) went the distance and was the winning pitcher for Indiana State. Â
Erin Lackey led the team with two hits and two RBI. Katy Huels, Hannah Sutton, Riley Jestadt, and Ailey Schyck each had one hit and Rylee Webb had an RBI. Â
Murray State softball returns to Racer Field on Wednesday, March 26 for a midweek doubleheader against former OVC foe UT Martin. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. CT.Â
