Murray, Ky. – The Racers dropped their first Missouri Valley Conference match of the season in a 1-0 loss to Drake on Sunday afternoon, falling to 0-1-2 in league play.
Drake (5-3-4) found the net in the 18th minute, and Murray State (5-4-3) was unable to find the equalizer despite creating offensive chances throughout the match.
Sophomore Breece Bass led the Racers with four shots, including two on goal. Senior Megan Wilson added three shots, also placing two on target. Murray State outshot the Bulldogs 9-7.
"It's always a tough game," head coach Matt Lodge said. "There's a reason Drake leads the league in yellow cards by a country mile. They're chippy, they get into the mind games."
Drake committed 19 fouls and was issued three yellow cards, while the Racers were whistled for seven fouls.
"I thought we were the better team," Lodge said. "I thought we deserved to win. But when the bounces don't go your way, the calls don't go your way, it's tough. I'm really proud of our work rate, our fight, our grit. If we play like that the rest of the way, we'll be fine."
The Racers return to action Sunday, Oct. 5, as they head to Nashville to face Belmont.
