Scouting Southern Illinois
The Salukis have had a rough start to the season, much like MSU, as they are 1-8 on the year and have lost their last four games. The game versus the Racers will be the fourth Ohio Valley Conference team that SIU will have faced this season. The Salukis earned their lone victory of the year over Austin Peay, but have fallen to UT Martin and Tennessee State.
SIU is averaging 52.7 points per game and being outscored by 10.9. The team has recorded less than 50 points in four games this season and tallied over 60 twice. The Salukis are keeping the stat sheet close to their opponents in most categories, including shooting percentage and rebounds. However, SIU is committing 5.7 more turnovers per game (21.1 to 15.4) and having the ball stripped almost twice as much as they are stealing from their opponents (5.7 to 10.3 steals per game). The one area where the Salukis have a clear advantage is in blocking, recording 4.7 blocks per game and only having 2.2 of their shots swatted away.
Looking at the scoring by periods area of the box score it looks like the second half is better for both SIU and its opponents. However, that trend has not been true in the last three games, as the Salukis have scored fewer points in the second stanza than the first.
Teri Oliver is the lone member of the SIU team that is averaging over 10 points per game (10.4). She also leading the team in steals (10). Sindey Goins is netting 9.0 points per game and is shooting at a .469 pace from the field and .412 mark from beyond the three-point line. Katrina Swingler is also a strong shooter, making 45.6 percent of her shots and adding 5.1 rebounds per game. Charnise Mitchell is the leading rebounder for SIU, with 5.9 boards per game. CiCi Shannon is the reason for the large number of blocks per game for the Salukis, as she has tallied 21 of the teams 42 this season.
Against the Salukis
After not playing each other for two seasons, the Racers and Salukis renewed their regional rivalry last season in Carbondale, Ill., where SIU earned a 76-71 overtime victory.
Junior Rachael Isom is the top returner for MSU, with 11 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Tessa Elkins also had a strong performance during her rookie campaign, with six points and rebounds.
The stat sheet was close to even across, except for a few key areas. The Racers earned a 17-28 advantage in turnovers, but the Salukis out-rebounded MSU, 58-38, and tallied 24 of their points on the second shot of a possession.
The top returners for SIU are Teri Oliver and Eboni Crayton. Oliver tallied nine points and two rebounds. Crayton added 15 points and five rebounds, but has not played in the Salukis last three games in 2010-11.
The Series
The series with SIU is the longest amongst teams in the Missouri Valley Conference and currently stands a 30-5 in favor of the Salukis. SIU has been the winner of the last 17 games, dating back to Dec. 12, 1989. The last time that the Racers earned a win was Nov. 25, 1988 (68-64) in Carbondale, Ill. The last win for MSU at home was Dec. 2, 1980 (87-78).
Getting Some Air Time
With a recent announcement from the OVC, the Racers will now have at least one game on television this season. The OVC added nine games to its OVC Basketball Television Package. The Racers game at UT Martin (Dec. 22) will now be shown on the Wazoo network, ESPN3.com, and ESPN Full Court. Local cable subscribers can see the games on channel 81 for Murray Electric subscribers and channel 214 for those with NewWave.
Jessica Jumping Right In
Red-shirt freshman Jessica Winfrey has been a stable force for the Racers in her first season on the court. The Marion, Ark., native is first on the team in rebounding, averaging 7.4 boards per game, and third in scoring (9.1 ppg). Against Morehead State, Winfrey tallied 11 points and a career-best 10 rebounds for the second double-double of the season by a MSU player. Her talents on the court have led to her scoring at least one point and adding at least one rebound in every Racers game this season, while also recording seven steals and four blocks.
No Senior Leadership
After fighting through an injury plagued year in 2009-10 the Murray State women's basketball team will be in a select group of NCAA DI teams this season that will allow them to use the drive and determination they discovered last year, as the roster has no seniors listed. The Racers are one of seven programs in the country with no seniors on the 2010-11 roster.
The youthful roster has just nine years of NCAA collegiate experience on it, which ranks third among OVC teams for the least amount of NCAA collegiate experience. The only teams with fewer years of experience than the Racers are UT Martin (3) and Eastern Illinois (8).
Lowe Down Against the Eagles
Junior Kayla Lowe, a native of Pikeville, Ky., seems to love being back home in the eastern portion of the state. Lowe has tallied 15-or-more points in three of the last four games played in that area of the state. The trend started with a 15-point performance against Morehead State (Feb. 25) and was followed by a 28-point performance less than a week later in the same gym (March 2). Lowe then tallied 15 points against Eastern Kentucky (Dec. 2) last week in the opening game of the OVC schedule and earned 23 points against the Eagles (Dec. 4). That makes two-straight 20+ point performances against Morehead State.
Robinson Highlight Night
The opening night of OVC action saw sophomore Mariah Robinson making a personal highlight reel. The Beaver Dam, Ky., native tallied a season-best 21 points, including 17 in the first half of action. She also added five rebounds, two assists, and a season-high three steals.
Continuing Streaks
Four members of the MSU team that returned from the 2009-10 season have continued streaks that they started a year ago. Junior Rachael Isom has been a key force for the Racers since last season, scoring at least one point in 44 straight games and recording a rebound in 23. Fellow junior Kayla Lowe has started the last 18 games. Sophomore Mariah Robinson in the final returner with a streak, tallying a rebound in the last 23 games.
New Season New Name
Murray State University's Regional Special Events Center (RSEC) will now be known as the CFSB Center, thanks to the largest gift in Murray State athletics history. CFSB (Community Financial Services Bank) donated $3.3 million to MSU's athletic program securing naming rights of the facility.
OVC Tournament Changes
This year the OVC Tournament will all be contested at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn., from March 2-5. The top two teams in the regular-season standings will earn byes into the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. This is the first season that the conference will bring all eight teams to one venue for the entire tournament, as in the past the first-round games have been played on campus sites.
Up Next
The Racers will play their last road game of 2010 when they travel to face UT Martin (Dec. 22). Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Elam Center. MSU will then have a few days off for the holidays before starting the longest home stand of the year, at four games. The first opponent of the series is SIU Edwardsville (Dec. 30) and the final will be Austin Peay (Jan. 8).
