Scouting IUPUI
The Jaguars are 3-9 overall and 1-2 in The Summit League after a close loss New Year's Eve. All three of IUPUI's wins have come at home, including a 65-48 win over common opponent Southern Illinois. The Jaguars are under new leadership this season, as Austin Parkinson took over the helm. Parkinson didn't have far to travel, as he was an assistant for the IUPUI men's basketball team prior to taking the women's head job. Since taking over the Jaguars have recorded the same number of wins in the first 12 games that they tallied in 2009-10.
IUPUI has one player with a double-digit scoring average, but five players that are within a five-point average. Kerah Nelson leads the Jaguars with 10.6 points per game and 6.9 boards per game. Nelson missed two games due to injury. She shoots 42.5 percent from the field and despite missing two games has taken more shots than anyone else on the team by 10. Janna Eichelberger is next on the scoring list, with 8.4 points per game and took over the lead scorer spot while Nelson was absent. Eichelberger also added 6.9 rebounds per game and shoots .409 from the field.
Gretchen Gaskin and Shea Collins are the other key shooters for IUPUI, with over 90 shots taken. Collins is the main three-point shooter, with 72 of her 91 attempts coming from beyond the arc. She hits 33.3 percent of her triples and 34.1 percent of her shots overall.
The Jaguars are a defensive-minded team, which tends to keep their scoring averages low. IUPUI is netting 53.1 points per game this season and is allowing 64.5 points to be scored against them. The defense can be seen in a larger number of steals (10.8 to 13) and turnovers (22.4 to 22.3) per game. The mind set also seems to lead to a larger number of free throws being taken by their opponents. The Jaguars are averaging 8.5 free throws per game, but their opponents are making 14.1 per game. IUPUI has taken just 178 (made 102) shots from the charity stripe this season, while its opponents have made 169 and taken 249.
The Jaguars play a large majority of their team in each game. Of the 12 players on the roster, four are averaging over 20 minutes per outing, and six more are in for an average of 15-19 minutes. This has led to a wide-range of scorers, but not to a large number of rebounders. Nelson and Eichelberger account for 41 percent of the Jaguars' rebounds. After the 83 boards by Eichelberg and 69 from Nelson, Clara Mitchell is the next on the list with 32.
Against the Jaguars
Last season the Racers traveled to Indianapolis to face IUPUI and came home with an 88-68 victory. Then-sophomore Mallory Schwab had a standout performance in front of a hometown crowd. Schwab tallied career highs with 17 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Rachael Isom is the other key returner from the series, with 14 points.
The Racers earned the win with a very strong shooting percentage. MSU shot 50 percent from the field and an impressive 60.9 percent from beyond the arc. The Racers made 14 triples, which ranks fifth in the record books for most made in a single game. The Jaguars were held to a .407 mark from the field and to no three-pointers (0-11). However, they made up some ground from the charity stripe, making 24-of-33 attempts. MSU was held to a 14-of-23 mark from the free throw line and was out-rebounded 37-33.
The top returners for IUPUI are Eichelberger and Nelson. Eichelberger tallied 13 points and added seven rebounds, while Nelson garnered 11 points, four rebounds and three steals.
The Series
This will be just the third game in the all-time series and the first to be played in Murray, Ky. The Racers own a 2-0 advantage in the series. IUPUI is one of three schools that MSU has faced from The Summit League. The Racers have fared well against those teams, with a 4-1 record.
Career Night Against the Cougars
Several players saw career highs increased in the Racers game against SIU Edwardsville. Red-shirt freshman Jessica Winfrey started the trend by recording 17 rebounds, 10 in the first half. The 17 boards are the most by a Racers player since Nov. 28, 2009 when Mallory Luckett garnered 15 rebounds against Morgan State.
MSU also saw four players record double-digit point totals for the first time in 2010-11 and two of those were career bests. Freshman Mary Jehlik garnered her first double-digit total, with 13 and sophomore Tessa Elkins continued to added to her career number with 12.
Robinson Stepping Up In Conference Play
Sophomore Mariah Robinson has stepped up her performance since the start of the OVC season. She has recorded a double-digit point total in all three games, with 21, 20 and 19 points. The Beaver Dame, Ky., native has also shot over .415 from the field and .444 from beyond the arc in the three league games, made 11-of-12 free throws and added two blocks and nine steals. Since the start of OVC play she has tallied a double-digit point total in five of the last six games.
Jessica Jumping Right In
Red-shirt freshman Jessica Winfrey has been a stable force for the Racers in her first season on the court. The Marion, Ark., native is first on the team in rebounding, averaging 8.7 boards per game, and third in scoring (9.1 ppg). She has tallied two double-doubles in three conference games, including her second at UT Martin (16 points, 10 rebounds). Her talents on the court have led to her scoring at least one point and adding at least one rebound in every Racers game this season, while also recording 13 steals and four blocks.
Mary Moving In
Freshman Mary Jehlik has earned a starting role in the last four games, beginning at Purdue (Dec. 12). The Mount Sterling, Ky., native has tallied career bests in points, rebounding, and shooting percentage since her advancement on the bench. She recorded a career-high seven rebounds in her first start at Purdue, and has increased her scoring bests to 14 in the last four outings. She also shot 50 percent from the field (3-of-6) against UT Martin.
No Senior Leadership
After fighting through an injury plagued year in 2009-10 the Murray State women's basketball team will be in a select group of NCAA DI teams this season that will allow them to use the drive and determination they discovered last year, as the roster has no seniors listed. The Racers are one of seven programs in the country with no seniors on the 2010-11 roster.
The youthful roster has just nine years of NCAA collegiate experience on it, which ranks third among OVC teams for the least amount of NCAA collegiate experience. The only teams with fewer years of experience than the Racers are UT Martin (3) and Eastern Illinois (8).
New Season New Name
Murray State University's Regional Special Events Center (RSEC) will now be known as the CFSB Center, thanks to the largest gift in Murray State athletics history. CFSB (Community Financial Services Bank) donated $3.3 million to MSU's athletic program securing naming rights of the facility.
OVC Tournament Changes
This year the OVC Tournament will all be contested at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn., from March 2-5. The top two teams in the regular-season standings will earn byes into the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. This is the first season that the conference will bring all eight teams to one venue for the entire tournament, as in the past the first-round games have been played on campus sites.
Up Next
The Racers will continue the longest home stand of the 2010-11 campaign with the team's first home conference weekend. Tennessee State first heads to the CFSB Center (Jan. 6) followed by Austin Peay (Jan. 8).
