The Murray State Racers begin a five-game road swing with a Sunday 3 p.m. contest against UAB at Bartow Arena in Birmingham, Ala. The Racers are 3-0 and off to their best start since the 2003-04 team started 8-0. MSU scored an 83-41 win at home Thursday. UAB opened its season at home Wednesday with a 70-60 loss to Creighton.
The Racers are meeting the Blazers for the fifth time since 1982 and the first since a 100-80 loss in Birmingham in 2005. MSU leads the all-time series 3-1 and scored its last win in Murray, Ky. in 2001.
New MSU head coach Steve Prohm is part of 52 first-year head coaches in NCAA D-I and 24 who are head coaches for the first time. Prohm was named coach (May 23) after Billy Kennedy took the head coaching job at Texas A&M.
Prohm's 3-0 start is tied for fourth among the 15 coaches in Racer history for the best start to a first season. He's tied with John Miller (1942), Steve Newton (1985) and Mark Gottfried (1995). Tevester Anderson (1998) had the best start of a Racer coach at 9-0.
The game at UAB starts a stretch of five road games for the Racers, as they don't play at home again until they host Dayton (Dec. 4). MSU will make their way through Atlanta, Minneapolis and then Anchorage on Monday for their first appearance in the Great Alaska Shootout Thanksgiving week.
The Racers are set to play the host of the event, Alaska-Anchorage (Nov. 23), before facing the winner/loser of the Dartmouth/San Francisco match-up (Nov. 25). The Racers' stay in Alaska ends with a game against one of the teams in the bottom of the bracket: Central Michigan, New Mexico State, Southern Mississippi or UC Irvine (Nov. 26). Before coming home for Dayton, the Racers play at Western Kentucky (Dec. 1).
In all, the Racers will travel approximately 9,600 miles before their next game at the friendly confines of the CFSB Center.
