The Murray State Racers host the Lipscomb Bison to start a three-game homestand when they two meet for the first time Thursday at the CSFB Center at 7 p.m.
The Racers are 10-0 after a 76-72 win Sunday at no. 20 Memphis marking MSU's first win on the road against a ranked opponent since taking down no.19 Notre Dame 56-54 in 1981. The Racers' 10-0 start also allowed them to break into the Associated Press Top-25 at no. 24 this week. It's the first time MSU has been ranked since before the 1998 NCAA Tournament when MSU was no. 25.
The Racers enter the game as one of only nine teams in NCAA D-I that haven't lost this season. MSU is the only team from the mid-major ranks that is undefeated.
Junior Isaiah Canaan is nearing the 1,000 point mark and will be the 38th member of the MSU club when he gets there. Canaan (946 points) is scoring 19.8 points per game which ranks him second in the Ohio Valley Conference and 29th in NCAA D-I. He has won two Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week awards already this season. He had a career-high 36 points to help MSU win the Great Alaska Shootout in double overtime over Southern Mississippi (Nov. 26).
The Racers have a 10-game home winning streak since their last loss to Eastern Illinois (Jan. 20). MSU has won 13 straight non-conference games since the last loss to Louisiana Tech (Feb. 21, 2009) in a BracketBusters game. The Racers have posted 162 wins and a winning percentage of 85 percent in their 14th season in the building and have never lost three in a row at home during that time.
New MSU head coach Steve Prohm is part of 52 first-year head coaches in NCAA D-I. His 10-0 mark is the best among the 24 first-time head coaches. Prohm was named coach (May 23) after Billy Kennedy took the head coaching job at Texas A&M.
Prohm's 10-0 start is the best start for a rookie head coach in Racer history.
The Racers have the Fourth-best start to any season in their 87-year history. Two teams have started 12-0 and one team (1935-36) started 16-0.
