Racers Go 13-0 With 78-54 Win Over UTM In OVC Opener

The Murray State Racers kept their perfect start to the season going Wednesday with a 78-54 home win over UT Martin in their Ohio Valley Conference opener at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky.
The Racers, ranked 22nd in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today polls, moved their record to 13-0 and their home-court streak to 13 straight wins in their final game before Christmas.
MSU (13-0, 1-0 OVC) started the game on a 14-3 run and led by 16 at the 6:53 mark on a Jewuan Long three-pointer. MSU pushed their lead to 36-16 seconds before the half on a steal and dunk by Latreze Mushatt.
A five-point run by Donte Poole made the MSU lead 50-24 with 13:13 remaining and the Racers cruised from there.
Poole led MSU with 15 points, sinking 5-of-6 shots on the night, including a pair of 3-pointers. Ivan Aska finished the night with 12 points, 10 coming in the first 20 minutes. He also lead the Racers with seven rebounds. Isaiah Canaan added 10 points, ending the night 8-of-9 from the free throw line.
The Racers were 28-41 from the field on the night, making 68.3 percent of their shots while holding the Skyhawks (3-11, 0-1 OVC) to 33.9 percent in the game. Ed Daniel was perfect on all four of his field goal attemps, while Aska and Poole each missed just one of their six shot attemps, while Long was 4-5 from the field.
The Racers return to action next week, traveling to Charleston, Ill., for a road contest at Eastern Illinois. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Racers' win means their home winning streak goes into 2012 at 13. MSU hasn't lost at home since last Jan. 20, against Eastern Illinois. MSU won their 100th OVC game tonight in their 14 seasons in the CFSB Center and are 100-18 (.847). MSU's all-time mark is 165-27 (.859).
MSU's win streak of 13-0 is getting close to the program records for best start to a season and best winning streak. The best start to a season record was set by Carlisle Cutchin's Racers in 1935-36 at 16-0. The best winning streak in MSU history was recorded by Billy Kennedy's squad in the 2009-10 season at 17 straight.
MSU now takes some time off for the Christmas Break before returning to action (Dec. 30) at Eastern Illinois at Lantz Arena in Charleston, Illinois. The Racers lead the all-time series with the Panthers 34-8 and are 13-5 at EIU. The game will be aired live on the Racer TV Network on the cable systems of NewWave Communications, Mediacom, Murray Electric and Comcast.
