The Murray State Racers take on the Eastern Illinois Panthers Friday at Lantz Arena in Charleston, Ill. The Ohio Valley Conference tilt tips at 7 p.m. as the Racers attempt to keep their remarkable season on the same track. MSU is 13-0 and off to their best start in 75 seasons and this week improved their national ranking as they moved to 20th in the Associated Press poll and 21st in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. MSU is ranked second in the CollgeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 poll. The Racers' 13-0 start trails only the 16-0 start by the 1935-36 team. The all-time win streak at MSU is 17 set by the 31-5 team from 2009-10.
The Racers are coming off a nine-day break for Christmas and are 1-0 as they try for their third straight OVC regular season championship. Eastern Illinois is 6-5 and also had nine days off since their last outing which was a 64-62 loss at Maine (Dec. 21.) The game with the Racers is the Panther's OVC opener. The two split their games last season with the road team winning each time. MSU has won their last three at Lantz Arena since an 83-80 overtime loss in 2008.
Junior Isaiah Canaan begins the EIU game 10 points from becoming the 38th member of the MSU 1000-Point Club. Canaan starts the night with 990 career points. His current 19.3 scoring average is second in the OVC and 32nd in the nation. Teammate Ivan Aska already joined the club this season marking the fourth straight season that a Racer has made the coveted 1,000-point mark. The streak started with Tyler Holloway (2009) and continued with Danero Thomas (2010) and Isacc Miles last season.
New MSU head coach Steve Prohm is part of 52 first-year head coaches in NCAA D-I. His 12-0 mark is the best among the 24 first-time head coaches. Prohm was named coach (May 23) after Billy Kennedy took the head coaching job at Texas A&M.
Prohm's 13-0 start is the best for a rookie head coach in Racer history ahead of the 9-0 that Tevester Anderson (now at Jackson State) had in 1998.
