“It was a tough match playing early in the morning after driving in late the night before,” said head coach Mel Purcell. “We won the No. 3 doubles and were up in the other two, but we were not able to push through for the win.”
The Racers (1-8, 0-1 OVC) saw the strongest performances from senior Luka Milicevic and junior Jorge Caetano in the singles matches. Milicevic fell in the first set of No. 3 singles (6-1) before forcing the second set into a tie-breaker. Samford's Carl Abalos fell in the second set 7-6 (7-5) in the tie-breaker and the two then battled to a 10-8 decision in the third set, with Abalos earning the win.
Caetano also forced his singles matches to three sets. Caetano was defeated by Kadi Carson at No. 1 singles by winning the first set 6-3, before falling 6-1 and 10-5 in the final two sets.
In doubles, senior Mason Johnson and junior Jose Berardo earned an 8-5 win over Carson Kadi and Fernando Costa, but MSU was unable to earn the doubles point despite being up early in the other two doubles matches.
“I was happy with how we competed today,” Purcell added. “We have four matches next week and we will look to get back on track and pick up some victories.”
MSU will remain on the road for one more match, Monday, March 14 against Middle Tennessee State at 2 p.m. before returning home for five matches.
