MSU started out on the right track, sweeping the doubles matches to go up 1-0 heading into the singles play. Senior Mason Johnson and junior Jose Berardo were the first to finish with an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles over Ryan Weatherly and Raphael Sousa. Junior Jorge Caetano and freshman Arthur Valle then sealed the point for the Racers, with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles over Kodie Edwards and Joao Souza. Seniors Luka Milicevic and Renaldo Domoney also earned a win at No. 2 doubles, with an 8-4 victory over Paolo Vecchi and Kristian Takac.
“It was really good to get a win in the midst of all the strong teams that we are playing in our non-conference schedule,” said head coach Mel Purcell. “I was impressed with how our doubles played today. Now we are just looking forward to playing a strong match at Middle Tennessee tomorrow.”
In singles Valle finished first with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sousa at No. 5 singles and was quickly followed by a 6-0, 6-0 win by Berado at No. 6 singles over Weatherly. Caetano secured the victory for the Racers with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Souza at No. 1 singles. Domoney then earned a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles over Takac.
The finals two singles matches went to tie-breakers, with Milicevic earning a 6-0, 7-6 (8-6) win at No. 3 singles over Eduardo Espinar. Freshman Joao Camara then secured the sweep after falling in the first set 6-1. Camara battled back to win the second set 6-4 over Vecchi at No. 2 doubles and then the two forced a super tie-breaker to 13-11 before Camara earned the win.
The Racers will hit the road for one match Thursday, March 17 at Middle Tennessee State at 1 p.m. before returning home for two matches against Drake (March 18) at 10 a.m. and Western Kentucky (March 19) at noon.
