“We were missing a couple of players today, so I had a couple of players that needed to step in or move up in the line-up,” said head coach Mel Purcell. “I was happy with the way everyone that got in the match today hustled and played hard.”
MSU's solo win came from senior Mason Johnson at No. 5 singles. Johnson fell in the first set to Carlos Do Val 6-3 before rebounding with a 6-4, 10-8 win in the next two sets.
“I was really happy with the performances that I saw from Luka Milicevic, Arthur Valle and Mason Johnson,” Purcell added. “Luka and Arthur were called on to move up in the line-up and had a strong performances and Mason came from behind to earn a win.”
The Racers fought hard in all three doubles matches, falling short of earning the point. Junior Jorge Caetano and senior Jadir Semensin lost 8-4 in No. 2 doubles, as the first team to finish. Johnson and junior Jose Berardo then fell 8-6 at No. 3 doubles. Senior Luka Milicevic and freshman Arthur Valle were the last duo to finish and forced the match into a tie-breaker before falling 8-7 (7-5).
Milicevic then went three sets in his No. 2 singles competition, losing 6-3 in set one and then taking set two 6-2 before losing 6-2 in the final set.
The Racers will return to the court Thursday, March 10 when they start a three-day road trip. MSU will first face Chattanooga (March 10) at 2 p.m. The Racers will then travel to play their first Ohio Valley Conference match of the season (March 11) at Jacksonville State, starting at noon. The final day of the trip will be at Samford for a March 12 math at 2 p.m.
