Left hander Luke Shuemaker allowed five runs over 6.2 innings and Cody Larson drove in three runs as Murray State defeated Morehead State, 9-6, in the series finale Monday afternoon at Allen Field.
Shuemaker (4-5) threw the second longest outing of the season as he held the Eagles to five runs on nine hits and six strikeouts. He had allowed just one run before running into trouble in the seventh inning.
The Breds (17-31, 7-12 OVC) got on the scoreboard in the fourth as Jacob Rhodes drew a one-out walk and went to second on a Zach Noonan single through the left side. Paul Ritzheimer followed with an RBI single through the left side that advanced Noonan to third. Larson plated the second run with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Eagles (10-36, 6-13 OVC) got a run back in the home-half of the inning as a leadoff walk went to third on a single to right center from Andrew Deeds. Eric Bainer drove in the runner when he beat out the throw to first on the attempted double play.
MUR had their biggest inning of the weekend in the sixth as they took advantage of an error to push across five runs. Rhodes and Noonan started the inning with back-to-back singles up the middle. Ritzheimer put down a sacrifice bunt that was dropped by the second baseman covering the bag, allowing Rhodes to score. Larson drove in a run with a single up the middle and Nick Paradossi moved both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Wes Warren plated a run with a fieldier's choice when the throw home was late. A wild pitch scored the fourth run before Brandon Elliot delivered a sacrifice fly to right center.
The Breds added to the lead in the seventh as Noonan ripped a one-out double down the left-field line and scored on Larson's bloop single into left center.
MOR put together a four-run inning of their own in the seventh as Austin Haney delivered a two-run homer off the foul pole in left field, and Taylor Davis and Deeds delivered back-to-back singles.
The advantage went to four runs in the eighth as Warren singled to right field and came around to score on a Rhodes sacrifice fly to center field.
The Eagles got a run in the bottom of the ninth on another RBI single from Davis.
Will Handlin (1) earned his first career save as he allowed one run on two hits and two strikeouts over 2.1 innings. Noah Smallwood (1-6) took the loss after allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits over five innings.
Larosn went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Noonan added three hits and three runs scored. Ritzheimer and Warren each added two hits.
The Breds close out the 2011 season Friday and Saturday afternoon against Tennessee Tech at Reagan Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. both days.custompages/Stats/Baseball/2011/game-48.htm
