Morehead State scored four runs in the first and fifth innings, and that was enough as the Eagles handed Murray State a 9-5 defeat in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Allen Field.

The Breds (16-30, 6-11 OVC) got on the board in the first inning as Brandon Elliott hit an 0-2 pitch into the right-field corner for a double. After moving the third when the catcher threw the ball back past the pitcher, Travis Isaak delivered a sacrifice fly to left field. Jacob Rhodes followed by being hit by a pitch and went to third on Zach Noonan's double to left center. Paul Ritzheimer added to the lead with a two-run single up the middle.

The Eagles (9-35, 5-12 OVC) responded in the home-half of the inning with RBI singles from Andrew Deeds and Eric Bainer, and a two-run double to right off the bat of Michael Fear.

MUR regained the lead in the fourth as Ritzheimer hit a one-out single through the left side and scored on Cody Larson's double to left center. Wes Warren drove in Larson with an opposite-field double off the netting in right field to score Larson.

After the first two hitters were retired in the fifth, the Eagles collected four-straight hits and drove in four runs. Deeds and Eric Bainer each drove in a run before Fear delivered a two-run home to left.

MOR added to the lead in the sixth on a solo home run to right center from Daniel Pugh.

Tyler Beers (3-8) took the loss after allowing nine runs on 13 hits and two strikeouts over six innings. Garrick Whittle (3-3) earned the victory after allowing five runs on eight hits and eight strikeouts over seven innings.

The two teams play the second game of the doubleheader approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
