The Murray State Racers take their perfect 16-0 record up against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks Thursday at 7 p.m. in the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky. The Racers are one of the hottest teams in the nation right now and have been riding a wave of wins since November. MSU is one of a group of three teams that haven't lost a game yet as they chase history. MSU is one off the program record winning streak and still a ways off from the 21-game streak in the Ohio Valley Conference.
The Racers face a JSU squad that scored their first OVC win Saturday with a home 72-65 win over Tennessee State. MSU is coming off an 87-75 win at Austin Peay Saturday that saw Isaiah Canaan hit seven straight threes in the first half on his way to 35 points as MSU moved to 4-0 in league play. The Gamecocks are 1-4 after the win over TSU. The Racers have the early OVC lead over five teams with one loss.
Heading into Saturday's games, Murray State is one of the remaining three unbeaten teams this season in NCAA D-I with a 16-0 mark. MSU joins Syracuse (Big East) and Baylor (Big-12) as teams who haven't lost a game yet.
The Racers are into their fifth consecutive week of being ranked in the Associated Press Poll. However, MSU is ranked higher in the ESPN/USA Today poll for a second straight week at no. 14, while they're no. 15 in the AP poll.
Either way, the rankings are an all-time high for MSU topping the no. 16 slot they had twice in the early 1950's. MSU is also the no. 1 team in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll for the first in program history, the first for an OVC team.
The Racers' 16-0 start is tied with the 16-0 start by the 1935-36 MSU team as the best in the program's 87 seasons. The all-time win streak at MSU is 17 set by the 31-5 team from 2009-10.
New MSU head coach Steve Prohm is part of 52 first-year head coaches and 24 first-time head coaches in NCAA D-I. Prohm was named coach (May 23) after Billy Kennedy took the head coaching job at Texas A&M.
This week Prohm was on the list of The Sporting News Coach of the Year mid-season candidates.
