The Murray State Racers will be trying for their 25th 20-win season in their 87-season when they take on the SIU Edwardsville Cougars at the Vadalabene Center Saturday at 8:05 p.m., in Edwardsville, Ill. At 19-0, the Racers have already clinched their 25th consecutive winning season which is tied with UConn for the fourth-best streak in the nation behind Syracuse, Kansas and Arizona.
The Racers will also try to stay perfect in their 2011-12 season as they enter the SIUE game with a historic 19-0 start for rookie head coach Steve Prohm. If the Racers win at SIUE, Prohm will be only the fourth rookie head coach of the 15 in MSU history to win 20 games. If MSU can beat the Cougars, they'll also set the school record for the fastest/earliest team to reach 20 wins.
The Racers' 19th win didn't come without great effort Wednesday in Morehead, Ky. The Racers trailed by nine with 15:25 remaining and the game was tied at the 5:42 mark. Lockdown defense and timely shots won this one for MSU as the Racers held the Eagles to 23 second half points and got key three-point baskets by Isaiah Canaan, Donte Poole and Zay Jackson. MSU broke a three-game losing streak at Johnson Arena in front of a packed house.
The Racers are into their sixth consecutive week of being ranked in the Associated Press Poll. However, MSU has been ranked higher in the ESPN/USA Today poll for the last three weeks at no. 10, while they're no. 12 in the AP poll. Either way, the rankings are an all-time high for MSU topping the no. 16 spot they had twice in the early 1950's. MSU is also the no. 1 team in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll for the first in program history, the first for an OVC team.
MSU and Syracuse are the two remaining unbeaten teams in all of NCAA D-I Basketball. The Orangemen were the first to reach 20 wins this season, and with a win, the Racers will be the second.
The Racers' 19-0 start surpasses the 16-0 start by the 1935-36 team as the best in the program's 87 seasons. MSU's 19 straight wins has passed the 17 straight the 2009-10 team won as the school's all-time win streak.
