Racers Play at Paducah Sun Open

Members of the Murray State men's tennis squad competed over the weekend at the Paducah Sun Open.
Tyler Jeffers advanced to the finals of the Men's Open Flight before being defeated by Bethel's Peter Baca, 6-4 and 6-2. Jeffers won three matches in the tournament prior to reaching the finals. After receiving a first round bye, Jeffers defeated Ernesto Escamilla 6-1, 6-2 in round number two.
In the quarterfinals, Jeffers was victorious over Mason Johnson in a three-set thriller, winning 6-4, 3-6 and 10-7. Next up in the semifinals was Robin DeMasse, Jeffers defeated him in straight sets, 6-4 and 6-4.
Joao Camara and Adam Taylor also competed in the open's flight for the Racers and were defeated in round two. Camara defeated his first round opponent Seth Ferguson 6-2 and 6-0 before bowing-out to DeMasse 6-3, 6-0. Taylor won his first match over Evan Watkins 6-0 and 6-1 and lost in the second to Nicola Slavik in three sets, 6-2, 4-6 and 10-8.
“It was a good chance for some of our guys to get some matches played this fall,” said Head Coach Mel Purcell. “It's a good opportunity for some guys to come over here and play without the schools having to pay an entry fee to compete."
The Racers are off until the Region Eight tournament Oct. 17-21.
