The Murray State Racers open the 2012-13 season at home Friday when they meet the Brescia Bearcats at 7:30 p.m. at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky. The game marks the beginning of the 88th season in the history of the program as MSU enters the season in search of their 1,600th all-time win and their 600th Ohio Valley Conference victory.
Entering the game, MSU is 61-3 in the modern era (since 1948) in home openers and have won their last 22. MSU's last home opening loss was to Southern Illinois in triple-overtime in 1989 by a score of 114-108. The other home opening losses for MSU were to West Virginia Tech (1982) and Tennessee Wesleyan (1978).
MSU is 52-12 (since 1948) in season openers and have won their last two against East Tennessee State and Harris-Stowe. MSU's last loss in a season opener came in 2009 at California.
MSU's season opener is part of a women's-men's double-header. The MSU women's team plays Western Kentucky at 5:15 p.m.
After the Brescia game, the Racers hit the road for their first appearance in the Charleston Classic (Nov. 15-18) at TD Arena in Charleston, S.C. The Racers meet Auburn in the first round. MSU will meet either St. John's or the host, College of Charleston in the second round. MSU's third game opponent will come from a group that incldues: Baylor, Boston College, Colorado and Dayton.
After the Brescia game, the Racers' next game at the CFSB Center is against Old Dominion (Nov. 24).
The Brescia Bearcats are coached by former colleague and friend Josh Gibson, a 2003 Murray State graduate. A head coach for the first time, he returns to the CFSB Center a season after he had a hand in MSU's fantastic season in 2011-12. Gibson served as operations and video coordinator for the Racers last season and also volunteered with the Racers in the 2006-07 season. Gibson's father, Darrell, is a former play-by-play voice of the Racers in the early 1980's.
Brescia started the season at home with a 59-52 loss to Indiana-South Bend, but rebounded (Oct. 29) with a win at Union College 82-72. The Bearcats lost at Campbellsville Monday night 61-46 and played Thursday night at home against Union.
