Men’s Tennis Battles to 4-3 Win Over SIU Edwardsville

The Murray State men's tennis team got back on the winning track with a 4-3 Ohio Valley Conference win over SIU Edwardsville in the Racers (3-5, 1-1 OVC) first home conference match of the season at Bennie Purcell Courts.
“Our doubles were very strong for us today,” said head coach Mel Purcell. “I switched up the line-up a little today and the team came through. Our doubles teams continue to improve and will give us a chance to compete for a championship. Today was a match that could have gone either way and I think that our conditioning made a big difference today.”
MSU earned the doubles point with No. 2 and No. 3 doubles earning wins for the Racers. Freshmen Max McLean and Aleks Mitric started the match with a 9-7 win at No. 3 doubles over Gary Dias and Stephen Washuta. No. 1 doubles then fell, putting the decision for the doubles point on senior Jose Berardo and junior Tyler Jeffers at No. 2 doubles. The duo came through with an 8-6 win over Dylan Reed and Morten Christensen.
McLean made the score 2-0, in favor of MSU, with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles over Devan Faulkenberg. The Cougars then earned a point, with a win at No. 3 singles before sophomore Arthur Valle then pulled the Racers to 3-1 with a 7-5, 7-5 win at over Marten jonsson at No. 1 singles.
Jeffers then secured the win for the Racers by defeating Jacob Tanulanond at no. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-4.
MSU will continue its busy two-week schedule with a Monday, March 19 match in Lexington, Ky. The Racers will battle with Kentucky at 5 p.m.
