The Murray State women's tennis team earned a key Ohio Valley Conference victory over Austin Peay, 4-3, in Clarksville, Tenn.
The Racers (8-7, 3-0 OVC) remained undefeated in league action with the win. MSU fell at No. 2 doubles, but then knotted the doubles point with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles from senior Ashley Pierson and freshman Jordana Klein defeating Vanessa Tavarez and Jovana Karak 8-4. No. 1 doubles then became the deciding match, where senior Cassidy Cunitz and junior Ashley Canty fell 8-5 to Vanja Tomic and Alison Carre.
"This was a great win for this team and especially for our two seniors,” said head coach Kara Amundson. “Austin Peay is a very talented team and this was a big uphill battle for us after losing the doubles point. I have said it before, but this team is incredibly resilient from the first point through the end of the match. That resiliency got us a big conference win today."
The Lady Govs added a second point by taking No. 1 singles, but Suga made the score 2-1 by winning No. 4 singles over Andra Cornea (6-3, 6-4). APSU scored their last point with a win at No. 3 singles before the Racers fought back to take the final three points of the match.
Freshman Carolyn Huerth started the streak with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Tavarez at No. 5 singles. Pierson tied the score at three, with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Karak at No. 6 singles.
The final match to finish was No. 2 singles, where Canty and Ornella DiSalvo battled through a three-set match. Canty pushed through for the win by winning 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.
MSU will return to the courts Saturday, March 31 when they travel to Martin, Tenn., to take on UT Martin who is also undefeated in OVC action. The match will start at 2 p.m.
