BOX SCORE
Right hander Alex Gordon made the most of his first career Ohio Valley Conference start as the junior allowed just two earned runs in a 4-2, complete-game victory over UT Martin in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Reagan Field.
Gordon (2-2) allowed just six hits and struck out four in the longest outing of his career.
The Breds (15-16, 2-5 OVC) got on the board in the third inning as Colton Speed and Paul Ritzheimer singled to start the inning. After Ritzheimer's single, nobody was covering third and time was not called, allowing a hustling Speed to advance to third. Ty Stetson drove in the runner with a fielder's choice to shortstop.
The Skyhawks (8-21, 2-5 OVC) took their first lead of the game in the fourth as Phil Sorensen drew a one-out walk and scored on a Matt Milligan double into the left-field corner. Matt Young followed with an RBI single through the left side.
MSU regained the lead in the fifth as Speed and Ritzheimer singled with one out. With two outs, Travis Isaak delivered a two-run double to left center, his 18th double of the season.
The Breds added a run in the sixth as Mike Kozlowski doubled into the right-field corner to start the inning. After a Dylan Wheeler single put runners on the corners, Noah Zipko put down a sacrifice bunt to score Kozlowski.
Alec Mills (2-4) took the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits over seven innings.
Wheeler, Speed and Ritzheimer each collected two hits in the victory.
The two teams will play the second game of the doubleheader approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
