The Murray State Racers hit the road this week for a pair of games starting with a Thursday game at Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tenn. Tip time at the Eblen Center is 7 p.m. on ESPNU. The Racers (14-4) and Golden Eagles (7-11) will be heard over the air on Racer Radio on WFGE 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. After the game at TTU, the Racers play at Jacksonville, Ala., Saturday at 4:30 p.m. on the Racer TV Network.
The Racers' series with TTU is among two of the original members of the Ohio Valley Conference when the league was formed in 1948. Since their first meeting 18 years before the league was formed in 1930, the two have played 169 times with MSU leading the series 122-47 and 44-37 at TTU's home court. The Racers have won three straight since losing to TTU in the OVC Tournament semifinals in 2011. This will be the only meeting of the regular season between the two as TTU resides in the OVC east division and the Racers in the west.
When Monday's NCAA D-I statistics were posted, the Racers were the only team in the nation that had a top-10 scorer and rebounder. All-America Isaiah Canaan who is scoring 21.5 points per game on the season is eighth in the nation and first in the OVC. Ed Daniel, an All-OVC preseason pick, is pulling down 10.7 rebounds per game (also tops in the OVC) and is 9th ninth in the nation. Canaan is ninth in all-time scoring at MSU and Daniel is 16th in rebounding.
Canaan enters the TTU game with a school-record streak of 27 games with a made three-point basket. Canaan is 239 points from becoming the sixth member of the MSU 2000-Point Club and the 17th in the history of the OVC,
The Racers are coming off winning their first instance of back-to-back home games this season. MSU overcame slow first halves in each game to beat Eastern Illinois 70-49 last Thursday and SIUE by a 70-61 score on Saturday for their third straight win. MSU shot 31 percent in the first half of those games, but came back to shoot a blistering 68 percent in the second half. MSU was outscored by eight in the two games but had a lead of 38 points when combining the second halves of the pair of games.
After the road trip this week to TTU and JSU, the Racers will finish the season with six games at home in the final eight. MSU hosts Austin Peay a week from Saturday (Feb. 2) after having all of next week off.
