The Murray State women's soccer team will continue OVC action this weekend with a pair of away matches in Tennessee. The trip begins Friday in Nashville against Belmont and concludes Sunday versus Tennessee Tech in Cookeville. Game time for Friday is set for 5 p.m., while Sunday's kick-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
The Racers did not get off to the start they were hoping for in OVC play last weekend, as they dropped contests to both Southeast Missouri and UT Martin at Cutchin Field. A goal with just seconds left in the first half was the difference against Southeast Missouri, while a second goal in the early second half proved to be the Racers' undoing against UT Martin.
Julie Mooney scored the lone goal for the Racers on the weekend, as she found the back of the net with just over five minutes remaining against the Skyhawks. Mooney also led MSU in both shots and shots on goal last week, taking seven shots and placing four of them on goal. Despite allowing three goals over the two-game span, freshman Savannah Haberman tallied 11 saves on the weekend and spent all 180 minutes between the posts.
Friday will be just the fifth meeting between Murray State and Belmont and the second since the Bruins moved to the OVC. Belmont has won each of the last two matches between the two teams with a pair of 2-1 wins at Cutchin Field in 2008 and 2012.
The last win for the Racers in the series came in 2002 when they topped the Bruins, 6-1, at Southeast Missouri. The only meeting at Belmont occurred during the Racers' 2000 inaugural season when they fell to the Bruins, 4-1.
Belmont will enter weekend at 2-5-2 overall and 0-1-1 in the OVC. The Bruins opened league play last weekend with an overtime loss at home against Eastern Illinois and a tie at SIU Edwardsville. Amy Jo Anderson scored the only goal for Belmont on the weekend, a strike in the 58th minute against SIUE that gave Belmont the lead. The lead did not last as the Cougars struck in the 68th minute forcing a tie that held throughout regulation and two overtimes. In the loss to EIU, it was another late goal that sank the Bruins, this time just 1:35 into the first overtime.
Allie Hicks leads Belmont on the year with two goals while Katie Proud, Kim Elmore and Elise DeTrude each have one assist. Nicole Berner has played all nine matches for the Bruins this season and has spent all but just over 30 minutes between the posts. In that time she has allowed 19 goals, made 43 saves and has a goals allowed average of 2.09.
The all-time series between Murray State and Tennessee tech is a strange one. From the first meeting in 2000 to 2005, the Golden Eagles dominated the series with six wins and a tie. However, in 2006, the Racers won their first ever contest in the series and would go to win the next six meetings.
Tennessee Tech broke the streak of seven straight MSU wins last season when they topped the Racers, 2-1, in Murray to make the series even at 7-7-1. While MSU is 3-4 all-time in Cookeville, they will enter Sunday with momentum having won each of the last three at Tech Soccer Field.
After a big 1-0 win at SIU Edwardsville to open their conference season last weekend, Tennessee Tech took a step back Sunday by falling at Eastern Illinois, 4-2. As a result, the Golden Eagles will begin this weekend with an overall record of 3-8 and a 1-1 mark in the league. Shannon Rountree scored the game-winner for Tennessee Tech against SIUE, while Katie Phillips and Taylor Balzei each netted their first goal of the season against EIU.
Ellie Iaciofano is currently leading TTU with three of their eight goals on the year and has assisted on three of the other five. Jordan Brown has been the lone goalkeeper for Tech on the year with 61 saves, a goals against average of 1.63 and 15 goals allowed.
