The Murray State women's soccer team travels to Jacksonville State Friday for its final away match of the 2013 season.
The Racers were shutout on the road last weekend, falling 2-0 at Eastern Kentucky Friday and 1-0 at Morehead State Sunday. While scoring was an issue for the Racers last week, shot production all played a key factor in the losses. Murray State entered last week averaging 15.4 shots per game with 7.6 of those going on goal. Against the Colonels and Eagles, MSU averaged just 10.5 shots per game and just 3.5 on goal.
Julie Mooney led the Racers on the week in total shots with five, while Kaitlyn Hayes was the only Racer to place multiple shots on target with two. Savannah Haberman once again saved shots at a high percentage, making four and seven saves in the matches, giving her a total of 80 on the year.
The Racers currently hold a 6-3-1 all-time advantage against Jacksonville State and have owned the series in recent years. Murray State has not lost to JSU since 2007, winning four times and tying once over the five-year span. Despite the current streak, the rivalry has been hotly contested as of late, with each of the last three meetings going into overtime.
The Gamecocks have fared better in the series on their home turf, going 2-2-1 over five meetings. The last overall win in the series by JSU in 2007 was also its last win at JSU Soccer Field, as the Racers have won and tied the two most recent meetings.
Both Jacksonville State and Murray State will enter Friday's match having already been eliminated from play-off contention, so the two teams will be playing for pride. The Gamecocks saw their play-off chances evaporate last weekend, as well, with losses at Eastern Illinois, 1-2, and SIU Edwardsville, 1-5.
Jacksonville State, who enters the match at 4-11-2 overall and 0-7-1 in the OVC, has garnered just one point in the conference table this season. The Gamecocks lone point came via a tie with Tennessee Tech, a team the Racers beat earlier this season.
Jackie Rush is the current team leader in goals with five, while Kelsey Bright leads in assists with three. The go-to keeper for JSU this season has been Taylor Hammond, who is currently 4-9-1 on the year with three shutouts, 84 saves and a goals against average of 1.94.
