Racers Fall At Old Dominion

The Murray State Racers saw their seven-point halftime lead slip away to a 70-60 loss Friday night to the Old Dominion Monarchs at the Ted Constant Center in Norfolk, Va.
The Racers (1-2) held a 36-29 halftime lead, but were unable to keep it going and were outscored by the Monarchs (2-1) 41-24 in the second half.
MSU had a slate of four in double-figures with Cameron Payne leading the way with 17 points and five assists, while Jeffery Moss added 11. Jarvis Williams scored 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Dexter Fields also added 10 points to the Racer attack.
The Racers enjoyed a seven-point halftime lead after they climbed out of a 17-10 hole with 10:21 to go. MSU answered the call with their own run of 16-4 to take a 26-21 lead with 4:12 left in the run. Moss hit the Racers' first three point basket of the game with 4:55 left.
In the first half, the Racers made an amazing turn from the field after they started 5-of-14, then finished with a flurry hitting 11-of-16. MSU started 0-of-5 from three-point range until they hit three straight in the final minutes of the half with one from Moss and a pair from Payne.
Murray State's good fortune ran out when ODU started the second half with a 15-3 run for a 44-39 lead with 15:17 remaining.
Tyler Rambo scored to cut the ODU lead down to 46-43 at the 11:39 mark, but MSU never got closer than four when the score was 61-57 at the 2:58 mark.
Shooting from the field was a stark contrast as both the Racers and Monarchs struggled in one half each. MSU shot 53 percent in the first half (16-of-30) with ODU coming in at 31 percent (9-of-29). But the hosts turned the tables with 52 percent in the second half (16-of-31) while the Racers slumped to 33 percent (8-of-24).
ODU held a big advantage from the free throw line where they shot 55 percent (15-of-27). The Racers managed 39 percent (7-of-18).

Former Racer star B.J. Jenkins was the guest of Racer Radio at halftime as the native of Virginia Beach attended the game. Jenkins is one of 25 Racer players that were two-time All-OVC picks. He was part of MSU's 2009-10 team that won 31 games and advanced in the NCAA Tournament with a win over Vanderbilt before a close loss to Butler. Jenkins also ranked in the top-5 in the nation with a free throw percentage of .905.
