The Murray State Racers host the Southern Illinois Salukis Tuesday (Dec. 17) when the two region rivals meet for the 31st time in a 7 p.m. tip at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky. The Racers and Salukis can be heard on Racer Radio on WGFE 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. Online streaming video is free from the OVCDigitalNetwork.com.
Murray State (4-5) is playing the third game of a three-game home stand. MSU has won two straight with a 65-63 win (Dec. 4) over Evansville and a 73-69 win (Dec. 7) over Lipscomb. In both wins, the Racers made key plays with the game on the line in the final minutes. In the two wins, the Racers outscored UE and LU 15-8 in 3-point baskets and won the rebound stat 73-68. Additionally, MSU held the opponent to 25 percent from 3-point range. The Racers got a much needed confidence boost by winning two games that were very close in the late minutes.
Cameron Payne, the top scoring freshman in the Ohio Valley Conference, was named OVC Freshman of the Week for a second time (Dec. 9). In the two MSU wins, Payne scored 12.5 points per game and dished out 5.5 assists. Payne has hit the ground full speed at Murray State and is leading the team in assists with 49 (third in the OVC and 43rd nationally) and in steals with 16 (sixth in the OVC and 121st nationally).
Gordon State JC transfer Jarvis Williams led the OVC for the week with 14.5 rebounds per game is second in the OVC (fifth in the nation) with 11.3 rebounds per game through nine games. KenPom.com says Williams is 43rd in the nation in grabbing nearly 26 percent of available defensive rebounds per game. He has recorded four double-doubles this season and five rebound games of 10+. He also has three other games with nine rebounds.
After a year wait since his transfer from Clemson, the Racers are glad to have guard T.J. Sapp on the floor for the first time when the Racers host the Salukis. Sapp has been a big part of the team, but now will suit up. Sapp is an excellent defender and gives the Racers more options in the back court at the point guard and shooting guard positions.
The Racers meet the Salukis for the 31st time with the mind to snap a three-game skid against them. SIU has won the last three meetings (2004, 05, 06) since their last loss to MSU in 2003 at the CFSB Center.
Murray State looks to continue making their home court advantage at the CFSB Center. Entering the SIU game, the Racers are 77-11 (.875) in 16 seasons in the building against non-OVC teams and are 186-33 (.849) overall. MSU has won two straight since losing to Middle Tennessee (Nov. 26).
The Racers play one more game before Christmas when they travel to Bowling Green, Ky. to meet old OVC rival Western Kentucky Saturday in a 1 p.m. tip. The game at Diddle Arena will be carried by the Racer TV Network and ESPN3. The Racers and Hilltoppers will be meeting for the 151st time.
