The Racers (5-6) have won 3-of-4 and saw their three-game win streak stopped (Dec. 21) at Western Kentucky 71-64. T.J. Sapp, playing in just his second game at MSU after transferring from Clemson, scored 25 points and was 5-of-7 from 3-point range. Sapp averaged 20 points per game for the week and was named the Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week. Sapp has given MSU a huge lift off the bench in his first two games. Gordon State transfer Jarvis Williams had a career-high 24 points against the Hilltoppers.
Other than Sapp's hot start, the Racers have four others scoring in double-figures including OVC Freshman of the Year candidate Cameron Payne at 13.0 points per game. Williams is at 13.3ppg, while Jeffery Moss (11.7) and Dexter Fields (10.6) help the balanced attack. Payne is third in the OVC and 34th in the nation in assists, while Williams ranks second in the OVC in rebounds and is 10th in the nation.
The Racers have had good production in the last two games from their front court. Against SIU and WKU, the Racers combined for 64 points in the paint.
The Flyers (9-3) had a six-game home win streak stopped on a long 3-pointer by Southern Cal's Pe'Shon Howard (Dec. 22). The game was about to go to a second overtime, when the shot went in and UD fell 79-76. UD was led by Jordan Sibert with 21 points. Dyshawn Pierre recorded his second straight double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
UD also has a balanced offense with four scoring 10+ points per game, as Sibert leads the way at 13.5. The Flyers were ranked earlier in the season and have wins over the likes of Georgia Tech, Gonzaga and California.
The game marks the third straight season that the Racers and Flyers have met. The current run of games started at MSU's home court in 2011 which the Racers won 75-58. The win was the ninth in MSU's historic 23-0 start that season. In 2012, the Racers played at UD and lost 77-68 in a game that MSU led with 3:40 remaining. The loss ended MSU's school-record 16-game road win streak. UD leads the all-time series 6-3.
The Racers' game at Dayton marks the final non-conference regular-season game as the start of the OVC season begins next week. The Racers will start the league season at home (Jan. 2) in the CFSB Center against Southeast Missouri State and (Jan. 5) against UT Martin. The MSU and SEMO game marks the meeting of the top two teams in the OVC Preseason Poll as they shared the top spot in the predicted finish in the OVC West Division. The UTM game will be televised by the CBS Sports Network.
