The Murray State Racers (20-9) look for their 16th OVC Tournament title and second straight when they begin play in the semifinals Friday at 8 p.m. CT at Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn. The game will be heard over the air on WGFE 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. ESPN3 will air the game live online and a replay will come at 12:30 a.m. Saturday on ESPNU.
The Racers' opponent was to be determined as the event began with games on Wednesday. MSU won the west division with a 10-6 mark and earned the No. 2 seed and exemption past the first round and the quarterfinals into the semifinals. MSU waits as No. 6 Southeast Missouri, faces No. 3 Eastern Kentucky Thursday with the winner meeting the Racers on Friday. SEMO beat Eastern Illinois 78-68.
As the No. 2 seed, the Racers break a streak of being the No. 1 seed in each of the last three seasons. The last time MSU didn't get the top seed was 2009 when they were third.
Municipal Auditorium is hosting the OVC Tournament for the third straight season and the ninth overall. The years that the arena has hosted the event are 1967, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2004, 2008, 2011, 2012 and 2013.
MSU's All-America Isaiah Canaan has 1,999 points and is posed to become the sixth member of the MSU 2000-Point Club and the 17th in the OVC. Canaan is first in the OVC and sixth nationally with 21.6 points per game. Canaan also owns the school-record for consecutive games with at least one made three-point basket at 39 straight games.
Ed Daniel is 12th this week nationally with 10.3 rebounds a game. He ranks 12th all-time at MSU with 707 and is the 12th Racer to reach 700 rebounds. He is six blocked shots from becoming the all-time leader at MSU.
Canaan and Daniel each earned All-OVC First Team honors this week with Canaan being named Co-Player of the Year. He is one of three MSU players to be selected to one the All-OVC teams in all four seasons at school and his back-to-back OVC Player of the Year honors puts him in an exclusive group of five at Murray State that have won mulitple awards.
Daniel is an All-OVC pick for the first time as he, Canaan and Jordan Burge make up the winningest class in Racer history with 105 wins.
