The Murray State Racers travel to Richmond, Ky., to meet the Eastern Kentucky Colonels in their third game of the Ohio Valley Conference season. The game tips at 6 p.m. CT at the McBrayer Arena as the Racers and EKU meet for the 156th time. Racer Radio can be heard over the air on WGFE 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. The Racer TV Network will air the game locally on the cable systems of Time Warner, Mediacom and Murray Electric. The Racer Network game will be online at ESPN3.com. Â OVCDigitalNetwork.com will also have coverage.
The Racers are 2-0 at the start of an OVC season for the third straight season and four of the last five. The Colonels are 5-0 at home this season and have a nine-game win streak at home.
MSU scored home wins last week over Southeast Missouri (Jan. 2) 82-75 and Sunday they outlasted UT Martin 91-77 for their fifth straight home win. MSU (7-7) won the rebound stat over the Redhawks and Skyhawks a combined 82-57. MSU is 6-0 this season when winning the stat and 0-7 when the opponent does. In the Prohm era, the Racers are 37-5 if they win the battle of the boards.
MSU's Cameron Payne was OVC Freshman of the Week for the third time. The frontrunner for OVC Freshman of the Year, Payne scored 23 points against SEMO and 27 against UTM. Jarvis Williams was the OVC Newcomer of the Week after he averaged 18 points and 16.5 rebounds for the week. His 18 rebounds in the SEMO game tied a 16-year record for the CFSB Center.
MSU is making its first trip to EKU in two years. Now that EKU resides in the OVC East Division and the Racers in the west, the two only meet once per regular season. In years gone by, the Racers' annual trip to EKU and Morehead State was dubbed "Death Valley" because of how long a road trip it was and how tough it was to get wins. The Racers now alternate road games each season to those places. MSU has won their last four trips to McBrayer Arena with the last coming on Jan. 4, 2012 by the score of 76-67. MSU's last loss at EKU was in 2008 by a score of 60-47.
Original members of the OVC, the Racers and Colonels first played in 1934 and have played every season since 1945. MSU leads the all-time tally 95-60 and are 35-34 in Richmond.
MSU Head Coach Steve Prohm is 59-19 in his third season at the helm. Already the fastest to 50 wins all-time at Murray State, Prohm will have his 60th with the next win.
The Colonels (10-5) are 1-1 in the OVC after splitting a road trip to Eastern Illinois and SIUE last week. EKU got 34 points and 10 3-pointers from Glenn Cosey (Jan. 2) at EIU and won 100-81. Cosey's night was an EKU record and it tied the OVC mark. On Saturday, SIUE beat EKU 85-79.
The Racers return home to the CFSB Center Saturday as they play Austin Peay as part of a women's/men's double-header with the tip time scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
