Game Notes
The Murray State Racers play an important road contest and send their seniors off with their final game this weekend as they pursue the regular season championship in Ohio Valley Conference women's soccer.
The Racers (9-7, 5-2 OVC) play at Austin Peay Friday at 7 p.m. at Morgan Brothers Field in Clarksville Tennessee. MSU plays the final regular season home game Sunday at 1 p.m. against the Belmont Bruins at Cutchin Field in Murray, Kentucky.
Sunday's match is MSU Senior Day as the Racers say goodbye to Julie Mooney (St. Peters, Mo.), Sonja Murphy (Wexford, Ireland), Bronagh Kerins (Sligo, Ireland), Pavlina Nepokojova (Prague, Czech Republic), Amber Hanson (Bourbonnais, Ill.), Rebecca Bjorkvall (Aland, Finland) and Halle Pinkham (Elizabethtown, Ky.).
The Racers lead the all-time series with APSU 9-4-1 and have won the last two meetings including the last season at home by a 2-1 final. MSU is 4-1-0 all-time at APSU. Against Belmont, MSU has a 1-4-0 all-time mark and have lost the last three meetings including last season at Belmont 3-2.
Murray State has played excellent defense in front of goal keeper Shelby Haworth. The freshman comes into the weekend with three straight shutouts and six in the 13 games she has played. MSU and Haworth lead the OVC (in league games) with a goals-against-average of 0.56. MSU's back line defenders deserve a lot of credit as they're limiting the shots that Haworth must face.
Mooney begins the weekend with 12 goals and will match the MSU all-time single-season mark with her next goal. Theresa Reedy scored 13 goals in the 2004 season. Mooney has 27 points and is tied for the single-season mark with Reedy from 2004. Nepokojova is sitting on seven assists and is two from matching the nine assists that Lauren McAdams had in 2000.
The Racers enter Sunday's game looking to extend their school-record home winning streak. Currently MSU has won seven straight at Cutchin Field since their last loss to Arkansas State (Aug. 22) in the season opener. The former MSU record of five was set in 2005. In the current seven game run, the Racers have outscored the opponent 22-3 and have won the last four by shut out.
Using the typical soccer points system in which a victory is worth three points and a tie earns one point, the Racers are in second place in the OVC at 15 points along with Jacksonville State and Southeast Missouri. The trio with 15 points trails first place SIUE with 18 points.
