Game Notes
The Murray State Racers women's soccer team returns Cutchin Field for a pair of Ohio Valley Conference matches on homecoming weekend in Murray, Ky. The Racers host Morehead State Friday at 3 p.m. and Eastern Kentucky Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Racers are in need of a home boost after dropping a pair of road games last weekend each by a 2-1 final at SIU Edwardsville and Southeast Missouri. The losses were the first of the conference season for MSU and they stand at 2-2 and in a tie for third place with six points. Morehead State is the OVC leader with 10 points. EKU has four points in eighth place.
Murray State certainly likes playing at the friendly confines of Cutchin Field. They've won five straight at home and are 5-1 this season with their only loss to Arkansas State (Aug. 22) 3-2. Since then, the Racers have reeled off wins over Georgia State, IUPUI, Northern Kentucky, Tennessee Tech and Jacksonville State. During the streak, MSU has outscored opponents 15-3. The Racers run is a new program record surpassing the four-game streaks from the 2000, 2001, 2008 and 2009 seasons. The longest unbeaten streak at home is seven games from the 2008 season.
Racer striker Julie Mooney continues her run to the top of the Murray State record book. The senior from St. Peters, Mo., scored her 25th goal last weekend and is now solo second in all-time goals at MSU behind the 34 Theresa Reedy scored from 2001-04. Mooney passed Rebekah Clay's 24 goals from 2005-08. Mooney's 14 assists is second behind Clay's 21 and her 64 points is third behind Reedy's 81 and Clay's 69. Mooney is also the career leader in shots on goal with 123. She is currently second with seven game winning goals, just behind Sophie Hargreaves (2008-11) with eight.
MSU is dead even this season against 13 opponents 21-21 in the goal scoring department and they've recorded 16 assists with opponents getting 17.
The Racers have gotten goals from seven players this season including nine from Mooney, which is third all-time for a single-season at MSU behind the 13 Reedy had in the 2004 season and 11 from Jackie Thomas in 2000. Harriet Withers has four goals for MSU this season, while Taylor Stevens has three. MSU has gotten one goal from Bronagh Kerins, Pavlina Nepokojova, Taylor Richerson and Lyssie Wright.
Shelby Haworth has made 10 starts in the Racer goal and is 5-5 with a goals-against-average of 1.17, which is ranked fifth in the OVC. Haworth has back-to-back shutouts at home and one on the road. She enters the Morehead game with a home shutout streak of 150:08 minutes. The last time she gave up a goal at home was against Northern Kentucky in the 30th minute. Since then, she has put together five straight scoreless halves.
After the weekend, the Racers hit the road again for games at Eastern Illinois (Oct. 17) and Austin Peay (Oct. 24). MSU closes out the regular season at home against Belmont (Oct. 26) and at UT Martin (Oct. 31). The OVC Tournament will be held at the home of the champion (Nov. 5-9).
