The Murray State Racers carry a four-game win streak into a pair of home games this week at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky. The Racers host the Alcorn State Braves (1-7) Wednesday at 7 p.m. and Illinois State Saturday at 3 p.m. All Murray State games are heard over free radio on WFGE Froggy 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. Neal Bradley is in his 24th season as the Voice of the Racers. Former MSU assistant coach Kenny Roth provides analysis. Free online video streaming is available at OVCDigitalNetwork.com.
The Racers (6-4) are coming off a thrilling road win Saturday 81-79 at Evansville. The win was MSU's first this season in three games decided by five points or less and it made them 2-1 this season in road games. Cameron Payne scored a career-high 32 points. Jonathan Fairell scored a basket off of an inbounds from the Racers' baseline with 1.1 seconds left to get the win.
The Racers meet an Alcorn State team that is 1-7, but played a tight game Saturday at Ohio in a 66-55 loss. MSU is 5-0 all-time against Alcorn and is hosting the Braves for the first time since 1996. MSU is 16-0 all-time against teams from the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
The Racers enjoy one of the best home-court advantages in all of basketball as they play in their 17th season at the CFSB Center. This season MSU is 3-1 at home. They lost the season-opener to Houston, but have since defeated Brescia, Bethel and Western Kentucky. MSU's next win at The Bank will be their 200th.
After falling out of the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll after they lost at Xavier (Nov. 24), the Racers have won four straight and got 20 votes this week in the poll but didn't crack the top-15. MSU opponents Belmont, Valparaiso and Evansville are ranked 10th, 11th and 14th.
Sophomore Cameron Payne was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week for a second-straight week. In MSU's lone game last week, Payne hit Evansville for a career-high 32 points. The OVC Preseason Player of the Year, Payne is on the preseason watch lists for the Bob Cousy and Lou Henson awards. He's first in the OVC and 18th in the nation with 68 field goals. He's also first in the OVC with 192 points. Payne is also moving up the active career lists in the OVC. Payne's 764 points is ninth on the scoring list and he's only played in 44 games. He's the fourth-best active player in assists with 237.
After the game with Alcorn, The Racers are at home Saturday for a doubleheader at the CFSB Center. The MSU women's teams hosts Jacksonville at 1 p.m. and the Racer men host Illinois State at 3 p.m. MSU plays its final game before the Christmas Break Monday at Southern Illinois.
