With the sun in the sky, the Murray State men's tennis team was able to play their match against Bethel (Tenn.) outdoors at the Purcell Tennis Courts. The Racers took full advantage, claiming their first victory of the season with a 5-2 win over the Wildcats.
Freshmen Mateo Barroetavena and David Hess both earned their first collegiate wins. Hess went 2-0 on the day with wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. Hess and Barroetavena teamed up at No. 3 doubles to pull off an 8-5 win while Hess went 6-1, 6-0 against Joshua Barre in singles.
With the doubles point at stake, the duo of Adam Taylor and Max McLean needed extra points to secure the singular doubles point. Taylor and McLean, who trailed earlier in the match, came from behind to secure a 9-7 win.
Taylor then went on to win his match in the top singles draw. Like the doubles, it wasn't an easy task. Taylor held on for a 6-4 win in the first set and again had to come from behind in the second set. Trailing 3-2, Taylor won four of the next five sets to defeat Peter Baca 6-4, 6-3.
Also coming out on top were both Nicholas Mitric and Aleks Mitric. After losing at No. 2 doubles, the brothers both earned wins in the singles portion of the afternoon. Aleks was a winner at the third draw, 6-0, 6-4, and Nicholas came from behind in his first set at No. 4 and cruised to a 6-4, 6-2 win.
The Racers next scheduled match is for March 15, in their OVC opener against Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tenn.
