Murray State men's tennis team looked to double up on their first conference win of the season as they took on Belmont at the Purcell Tennis Courts. The Racers were unable to gain the upper hand however, as they fell 5-2, lowering their record to 2-8 and 1-2 in the OVC.
The men opened the match struggling in the doubles competition. Belmont took courts two and three to earn the opening point. Adam Taylor and Max McLean were trailing at first doubles, in the most competitive match of the three, to Antun Mauricio and Marko Lovrinovic, 6-3, before the team's decided not to finish the match.
David Hess earned his second conference victory in as many days at the No. 5 slot. Hess defeated Hans Nardelli 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 for his win. The Racers other singles win came at the No. 6 position by default.
McLean and Aleks Mitric both had chances to pick up wins at the second and fourth draws respectively, but ran out of steam. McLean took the opening set 6-4 before falling to Lovrinovic 6-4, 6-1 in sets two and three. Mitric fell behind early with a 6-4 first set loss. He came back to win the second 6-1, but couldn't keep the momentum, dropping the third, 6-1.
At the first position, Taylor fought hard against Mauricio, who entered the match 7-4 in the spring. He lost in straight sets 6-4, 6-1. Nicholas Mitric fell to Cedric Dujacquier at the third draw, 6-2, 6-1.
MSU is off until next weekend when they welcome SIU Edwardsville to Murray Saturday, March 25.Â
