Murray State's men's tennis team captured in a win in a mid-week nonconference battle with Western Kentucky. The Racers won five of the six singles matches and took the match by the score of 5-2. The win puts MSU at 3-10 on the season, while the Hilltoppers fall to 3-7.
The afternoon did not start out as the Racers would have wanted. The Racers lost two of the three doubles matches, as WKU got on the board first, 1-0, collecting the doubles point. The only win came from the pair of Adam Taylor and Max McLean, who picked up their third straight doubles win.
From there, it was all MSU as they won singles matches 1-5, pulling away for the 5-2 win.
Taylor, playing in his final home match of his career, also earned his third straight singles win with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Josh Smith at the top position. Taylor leads the Racers with five wins this spring.
Playing at No. 2 singles, McLean picked up his second win of the spring season. He defeated J.T. Closi 6-1, 6-3.
The tightest battles came from the third and fourth positions. Brothers Nicholas and Aleks Mitric each needed three sets to pull out their victories. Both brothers won the first set before allowing their opponents back into the match with a second set loss. Nicholas Mitric then defeated Alex Taranda, 6-2, in the final set on court three for his second win of the season. Aleks Mitric followed him up with a 6-4 set three win on court four for his third win this spring.
David Hess was the final winner for MSU on the day. He took down Andrew Fish on court five, 6-4, 6-4 to improve to 4-8 in dual matches.
The Racers have now defeated the Hilltoppers each of the past six years.
With their home schedule complete, the Racers will hit the road and head east for a pair of conference battles with Eastern Kentucky (April 5) and Morehead State (April 6). Both matches are scheduled to start at 9 a.m. CT.
