Belmont used a pair of four run innings to jump out to a big lead and hand Murray State a 13-2 loss in the first game of a three-game series Friday afternoon at Reagan Field.
The Bruins (21-27-1, 10-14-1 OVC) seized control early as the first three hitters reach with Matt Beaty driving in two runs with a single to right field. They would add an RBI groundout and a two-out RBI single from Drake Byrd.
Belmont hit a pair of home runs in the fifth and push four more runs across in the sixth to extend their advantage. That would be more than enough for start James Buckelew (5-5) as he held the Breds to just two runs on three hits and six strikeouts over seven innings.
The Breds (19-27, 11-14 OVC) finally got on the board in the seventh inning. Anthony Bayus started the inning with a single to right, and was followed by a Kollin Dowdy single through the left side and a Tyler Lawrence walk to load the bases. Matt McGowan and Michael Hargrove followed with back-to-back sacrifice flies to center field.
Cameron Finch (3-7) took the loss after giving up seven runs on eight hits and seven strikeouts over five innings.
The two teams will play the middle game of the three-game series Saturday at 2 p.m. MSU will send left hander Brock Downey (8-2, 2.59 ERA) to the mound, while BEL will counter with right hander Austin Coley (3-1, 3.01 ERA).
