The Murray State women's soccer team will look to snap a three-match losing skid this weekend when it plays the last two matches of a five-match road swing. On Friday, the Racers will make the short drive to Murfreesboro to face Middle Tennessee for the first time in 10 seasons. On Sunday, MSU will keep its competition local when it travels to Saint Louis to meet the Billikens.
The Racers dropped a pair of matches in Florida last weekend with a 1-0 loss at Florida International on Friday and 4-0 defeat at Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday. AT FIU, the two teams played the first half to a scoreless draw with the Panthers outshooting the Racers, 6-2,in the frame. However, in the second half, FIU finally broke through in the 65th minute with all the offense it would need for the win on a goal by Johanna Volz.
On Sunday, FGCU took an early 1-0 lead in the match with a Tabby Tindell goal in the 36th minute. From there, however, things got worse for the Racers as the Eagles scored three goals in a span of 4:50 in the second half to claim the match, 4-0.
After meeting in each of the first four years of MSU's existence as a program, the Racers and the Blue Raiders have not met since 2004. Middle Tennessee swept the first four meetings in the series, two in Murray and two in Murfreesboro. Three of the four matches were decided by a 3-0 decision, with the outlier being the 2002 meeting in Murray, where the Racers were edged 2-1. The goal in the 2002 match currently stands as MSU's lone goal against the Blue Raiders in 360 minutes of action.
The Blue Raiders will enter Friday's match at 2-2-1 on the year after a 1-0 performance in its own Blue Raider Classic last weekend. Middle Tennessee opened play in the classic with a 3-0 loss to USF on Friday, but battled back to top Austin Peay on Sunday, 2-0. Emily Jorgenson scored her first goal of the season with just 10 seconds to before halftime in Sunday's win over the Lady Govs, in what would go down as the game-winning goal. In the 81st minute, Kelsie Roberts also found her way to the goal column with a header for the insurance goal.
Grace Summer currently leads MT on the year with four goals, while Jogenson and Roberts are the only Blue Raiders to have found the back of the net. Kelsey Brouwer has been the only goalkeeper for Middle Tennessee this season, notching all 486 minutes and 43 seconds between the posts. So far in 2014, she has allowed seven goals while also making 28 saves for a save percentage of 80.0. In addition, she has recorded one clean sheet and is allowing 1.29 goals per match.
Sunday will mark just the second meeting between Murray State and Saint Louis and the first since 2010. In the only other meeting between the two teams, the match ended in a draw after 110 minutes of action in which neither team was able to score.
Saint Louis is currently 3-3 on the season after splitting a pair of home matches last weekend. The Billikens opened play last weekend with a 3-1 over Western Illinois on Friday, but fell on Sunday to Northwestern, 1-0. Livi Logan-Wood put in the equalizer for SLU in the 23rd minute, then, just over a minute later, Kristen Clemens put the Billikens ahead for good with her fourth goal of the season. Tori Marshall padded SLU's lead in the 35 minute when she scored for the third time in 2014.
Clemens currently leads the Billikens on the season with four goals, while Marshall has three and Lindsay Elking has two, as well as a team-high two assists. Hanna BenBen has played all but 5:16 for SLU this season and has allowed nine goals and made 26 saves. She currently has a 74.3 save percentage and a 1.50 goals against average.
