Racers With Historic Win, Start OVC Play 5-0

The Murray State women's soccer team moved to 5-0 in OVC play for the first time in program history Sunday by defeating Jacksonville State, 1-0, at the JSU Soccer Field. Marissa Burroughs had the lone goal for Murray State, netting the game winner in 68th minute.
From the start, Murray State (9-4, 5-0) was looking to score, outshooting the Gamecocks 8-2 in the first half. Lyssie Wright, Destiny White, and Marissa Burroughs all took two shots in the first half but could not get it past the goalkeeper and went into the locker room tied 0-0.
Coming out of the half, Jacksonville State (6-7-1, 3-2-1) put up a fight against MSU. but that changed in the 68th minute. Taylor Stevens sent a long ball from the left side of the field, leading Marissa Burroughs to the front of the box. Burroughs took the shot and sealed the eventual win for the Racers.
Burroughs led all Racers with five shot attempts, with three going on goal, while Lyssie Wright, Destiny White, and Harriet Withers each had two shots.
Alex Steigerwald played all 90 minutes in goal for Murray State, recording her second straight shutout and making three saves.
Head coach Jeremy Groves was impressed by the way his team played Sunday. "The performance was fantastic today, we held off a very good team," said Groves.
The Racers will be back in action Thursday when they head to Morehead State. The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live on the OVC Digital Network.
