The Murray State women's soccer team will hit the road to take on two Ohio Valley opponents. On Friday, the Racers will be in Nashville to take on Belmont, followed by a trip to Jacksonville State on Sunday.
The Racers are off to one of their best starts in conference play in program history, starting 3-0 for the first time since 2008, coming off wins against UT Martin and Southern Missouri. Harriet Withers, Taylor Richerson and Taylor Stevens each recorded two goals over the weekend, while Caroline Ashton and Marissa Burroughs each recorded their second goals of the season.
Richerson and Stevens picked up OVC weekly honors for their efforts in the matches over the weekend. Richerson had two goals and two assists, earning her Offensive Player of the week, while Stevens was a leader for a defense that didn't allow a single corner kick against UT Martin. The defense also had a huge impact in the Racers win over SEMO, only allowing the Redhawks to take six shots over the entire 90 minutes.
Friday will be the sixth matchup between Belmont and Racers, with the Bruins leading the series, 5-1. In the last meeting, the Bruins defeated MSU 2-0 at Cutchin Field. The last time the Racers faced BU on the road was in 2013, where the Racers lost, 3-2. The only win for Murray State was in 2002 when the Racers beat the Bruins at a neutral site, 6-1.
Belmont is 2-9-1 this season and 1-3-0 in OVC play. The one OVC victory was a 2-1 overtime win over Eastern Illinois. Allie Svoboda had the game winning goal for the Bruins. In their most recent match, the Bruins were defeated by SIUE, 1-0.
The Racers are 8-3-1 all-time against the Gamecocks. In the last match between the teams, MSU defeated Jacksonville State at Cutchin Field 3-0. Taylor Stevens had two of Murray State's three goals in the contest.
