Racers Shutout Bruins to Remain Perfect in OVC
10/9/2015 10:52:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Murray State starts 4-0 in conference for the first time since 2008 as the Racers defeated Belmont 1-0 at E.S. Park on Friday. Taylor Stevens had the lone goal in the contest.
The Racers would come out first on offense with Rebecca Bjorkvall taking the first shot of the match in the 8th minute. The Racers would soon find themselves on defense until the 18th minute when Harriet Withers was able to pull away from the pack to face the goalkeeper one on one. Withers took a shot that was blocked by the goalkeeper. The ball bounced off the diving goalkeeper and found its way to the feet of Taylor Stevens. Stevens nailed a shot to the corner of the goal and put the Racers up 1-0.
MSU would battle with BU and head into halftime with the 1-0 lead.
The second half would be a defense struggle for both teams as neither team could seem to score. A handball called on Murray State gave the Bruins a chance on a free kick in the 84th minute. The shot went in the Racers favor as it was high and wide of the goal. Late action would brew for Belmont as the Bruins took a last effort shot with five seconds left to go in the match. Freshman goalkeeper Alex Steigerwald made an amazing save to keep the shutout in tact.
Murray State improves to 4-0 in OVC play and 8-4 overall whereas Belmont falls to 1-4 in OVC play and 2-10-1 overall.
Belmont outshot the Racers 14-7 for the match. The Bruins also led the Racers in corne kicks 7-6.
Taylor Stevens led all Racers with three shot attempts, one being on goal.
Alex Steigerwald was in goal for the Racers. She played all 90 minutes and had six saves. This was the first shutout of Steigerwald's college career and the third for Muray State this season.
The Racers are back in action Sunday as they take on Jacksonville State at the JSU Soccer Field. First kick is set for 1 p.m. and live stats will be available at goracers.com. MSU will return home for its match against SIUE on October 23. Live video coverage for that match will be provided courtesy of the OVC Digital Network.
