Murray State soccer hosts its first conference matches of 2015 as the Racers take on UT Martin on Friday and Southeast Missouri on Sunday at Cutchin Field. Friday's game is scheduled for a 3 p.m start, while kick-off Sunday is slated for 2 p.m.
The Racers are 5-4 this season and 1-0 in Ohio Valley Conference play, defeating Eastern Kentucky 2-1 last Thursday. Harriet Withers scored her fourth goal of the season in the match against the Colonels, but the game winner would come from Freshman Caroline Ashton, marking the first goal of her collegiate career.
In their most recent match, MSU was shutout by Saint Louis, 2-0. Taylor Richerson had an opportunity to score on a penalty kick in the 20th minute, but it was saved by the Billiken goalkeeper. Alex Steigerwald started in goal for the Racers, tallying eleven saves and allowing two goals.
Friday will be the eighteenth matchup between the Skyhawks and Racers. The last match played between the teams resulted in a win for the Racers as they defeated the Skyhawks on the road 1-0. In the match, goalkeeper Shelby Haworth had eleven saves.
UT Martin is 4-6 coming into Friday's match, but are 2-0 in OVC play, most recently recording a 1-0 victory over reigning OVC champions SIUE. Lisa Schmieder scored the game-winning goal on a pass from Saphyra Coombs-James in the match, which went down as goalkeeper MaKenzie Crawford's first collegiate shutout. For their performances last week, Schmieder and Crawford were named as OVC Player and Goalkeeper of the Week, respectively,
Against Southeast Missouri, the Racers trail in the all-time series, 11-6, with the Redhawks winning each of the past five matchups. In last year's match, a late surge couldn't get MSU past SEMO as they came up just short, 2-1. MSU's last win over SEMO came in 2009 in the form of a 1-0 victory at Cutchin Field.
SEMO is 6-3-2 overall on the season and 1-0-1 in conference play. In their most recent match, the Redhawks defeated Eastern Illinois 5-0. Natasha Minor quickly put the match away for the Redhawks scoring a pair of goals exactly one minute apart in the first six minutes of the contest. Kindra Lierz had two saves for the match in goal for Southeast Missouri, while Paige Blankenheim was named OVC Defensive Player of Week for her efforts in SEMO's first weekend of conference play.
