Back to work after the Christmas break, The Murray State Racers return home to play Brescia Bearcats the CFSB Center in a 7 p.m. game Thursday. The game marks the Racers' final non-conference game of the season before opening Ohio Valley Conference play Saturday at home against Tennessee State.
Froggy 103 (WFGE 103.7 FM) airs every MSU game with "Voice of the Racers" Neal Bradley, in his 26th season calling the action. Former MSU assistant coach Kenny Roth provides commentary. The Racers (5-8) are looking to snap a three-game losing skid after a 77-62 loss at home last Thursday to Wright State. Leading 36-30 at half, the Racers fell behind when WSU went on a 13-1 run. Â MSU battled back to make it a one-point game, but a Raiders run put the game away with 2:41 remaining and a 71-60 lead.
MSU enters the Brescia game ranked third in the OVC with a 79.8 scoring average and ninth in scoring defense as opponents are scoring 77.1 against them. MSU is making .432 percent of their shots and rank seventh in the league and opponents' .432 rate is fourth in the league. The Racers lead the all-time series with Brescia 4-0 and they have played the last four seasons.
Brescia is 2-8 on the season and coming off a 93-77 loss at Northern Kentucky. Brescia is NAIA D-II and competes in the River States Conference where they're off to an 0-4 start in the West Division. Dillion Geralds leads the Bearcats in scoring at 16.8 points per game, while Tavon Johnson (14.0) and Trey Howard (13.3) also average in double-figures. Geralds leads the team by grabbing 8.0 rebounds per game.
The Racers are playing their 19th season in the CFSB Center and enjoy one of the best home court advantages in all of college basketball. The Racers are 225-39 (.853) all-time in the building and 93-15 (.862) in non-conference games. The Racers are 4-1 this season as their loss to WSU was their first this season and it snapped a six-game win streak. In the last four seasons, MSU is 46-7 (.880) at home. MSU's all-time home win streak started in 1996 and was 47 in a row and the longest in the nation when it came to an end in 2000.
The second season begins Saturday for the Racers when they open the 69th season of play in the OVC with the Tennessee State Tigers in an 11 a.m. tip at the CFSB Center. The game will be aired by the CBS Sports Network. The day is a doubleheader day at the CFSB Center with the MSU women's team hosting TSU at 1 p.m.
After the TSU game, the Racers hit the road for two weeks with a road trip south to Jacksonville State (Jan. 5) and Tennessee Tech (Jan. 7) and then north to Eastern Illinois (Jan. 12) and SIUE (Jan. 14).
