The Murray State Racers enter the final game of the regular season in a position that they're unfamiliar with. With a chance to be a top seed in next week's Ohio Valley Conference Tournament vanished, the Racers host the UT Martin Skyhawks on Senior Day at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky., at 7 p.m. The doubleheader day starts with the women's teams meeting at 5 p.m.
All Murray State games are heard over free radio on WFGE Froggy 103.7 FM and online at Froggy103.com and GoRacers.com. Neal Bradley is in his 25th season as the Voice of the Racers. Former MSU assistant coach Kenny Roth provides analysis and commentary. Live and free streaming online video is provided by OVCDigitalNetwork.com.
The Racers entered the week in charge of their destiny, needing a pair of wins to secure the OVC West title and the No. 2 seed in next week's OVC party. However, those plans were derailed Thursday when MSU dropped an 85-74 loss at Eastern Illinois. Coupled with UTM's 72-56 home win over Tennessee State, the Skyhawks have clinched the No. 2 no matter what happens Saturday. However, the Racers can possibly get the No. 5 seed, but only if they win Saturday.Â
MSU is up against a hot UTM team that hasn't lost since Jan. 28 and has since reeled off eight-straight wins. MSU dropped a 63-59 loss at UTM on Jan. 30. The Racers have never been swept in the season series with the Skyhawks.
It's also Senior Day at the CFSB Center as MSU says goodbye to four amazing people that have been great parts of MSU Basketball in the last four seasons. Before Saturday's tip, Racer senior student-athletes Terron Gilmore, Wayne Langston and Jeffery Moss will be honored on their final regular-season game. Additionally, team manager  Laramie Locke will also be honored.
The day is also a celebration of the life of Murray State great Bennie Purcell, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., at the Burton Family Hall of Champions (adjacent to the CFSB Center). Friends and fans can stop by beginning at 4:30 p.m., where Bennie's sons, Mel and Del, will be there to greet them. J.H. Churchill will provide a registry. Bennie Purcell, who died at age 86 on Feb. 12, had an amazing life-long association with MSU and the athletics department starting as a basketball player in the late 1940's and it continued as a championship basketball and tennis coach.
