The Racers (16-13) are the No. 6 seed after finishing tied with UTM atop the OVC West Division at 10-6. MSU lost the tiebreaker with UTM and dropped to the No. 6 seed. The Panthers (13-16) were third in the division and is seeded No. 7. MSU won the first meeting this season at home 68-58 (Jan. 21), EIU turned the tables and beat the Racers at home 85-74 (Feb. 25). The Racers and Panthers have met five times in the OVC Tournament, but never in a first round game. The last meeting was in 2010 when the Racers came from behind to win a semifinal game and eventually the championship. EIU's lone win came in the quarterfinals in 2001. MSU hasn't missed qualifying for the OVC Tournament since 1979. EIU is in the OVC party for a fourth straight season.
Jeffery Moss is one of the top candidates bucking for a spot on the All-OVC team. Â Moss is the seventh leading scorer in OVC games with a 16.9 points per game average and could become MSU's seventh straight selection to the All-OVC First Team.Â
Moss, Wayne Langston and Justin Seymour are the team's returning players that have experience in the OVC Tournament. The three have appeared in a combined 10 games with 53 points. Seymour comes into the OVC Tournament with a 12-game streak of making at least one 3-point attempt.
If the Racers can get past EIU, it would set them up with a quarterfinal game against Morehead State. The Eagles are the No. 3 seed.
Before the Racers take on EIU, No. 5 Tennessee Tech meets No. 8 Austin Peay at 6 p.m. The winner meets No. 4 seed Tennessee State in the quarterfinals. Waiting to play the team that comes out of the first two days of play is No. 1 seed Belmont and No. 2 UT Martin.
