Korir Breaks 31-Year Old MSU 10K Record In St. Louis

The Murray State women's track and field team had a big day in two different places Friday as they broke a record in St. Louis and hosted the Margaret Simmons Invitational at Roy Stewart Stadium in Murray, Ky.

At Washington University in St. Louis, Murray State's Vallery Korir broke the school 10,000-meter record that had stood for 29 years. Korir posted a time of 35:08 breaking the 1985 mark of 36:30 by Teresa Colby. Korir also broke the Francis Field record of 35:44 set by Southeast Missouri State's Alison Steinbrunner in 2012.

Along the way, four other Racers set personal records in the race including Leah Krause who finished in 10th place with a time of 36:51, while Meagan Smith placed 11th at 37:30. Caroline Grogan had a time of 38:16 and placed 12th, with Emily Flaherty finished 19th with a time of 38:38.

MSU also had two runners compete in the 5000-meter run at Wash-U. Rebekah Priddy had a PR and finished 24th with a time of 17:53, while teammate Ida Mutai placed 63rd with a time of 19:27.

As the MSU distance runners were shining in St. Louis, the rest of the team turned in some good performances on senior day at Stewart Stadium.

Among the highlights of the Racers' home meet included Taylor Adcock posting a win in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:07.

MSU's 4x400 meter relay teams finished first and second. The quartet of Anna Curlin, Tamdra Lawrence, Jocelyn Payne and Tia Weston posted a time of 3:58 and broke the meet record from 2014. MSU's squad of Victoria Yocum, Emma Gilmore, Adcock and Emani Griffin ran a time of 4:04.

Lawrence posted a second place finish in the 400 meter event with a time of 58.94.

Anna Curlin and Jabreuna Brimlett placed second and third in the 100 meter dash with times of 12.34 and 12.40.

Heatherly Paschall was second in the 1500 meter with a time of 5:33.

MSU was second in the 4x100 relay with a time of 47.59 on the efforts of Brimlett, Payne, Yocum and Lawrence.

Brimlett placed second in the long jump with a jump of 5.42 meters.

Christina Meinhardt won the shot put with a throw of 12.07 meters. She was second in the discus with a throw of 39.15 meters.

The MSU men's cross country team also ran in the 800 meter and 1500 meter events. Gavin Galanes was second in the 800 with a time of 2:03 and he won the 1500 with a time of 4:10.

The Racers are back into action at the Western Kentucky Relays (April 8-9) in Bowling Green, Ky.

After the meet was finished, the Racers had some fun by hosting a junior competition. The Fastest Kid In Murray event featured a mixed 100-meter dash and a mile run. Laila Hudspeth won the 100-meter event with a time of 18.98, ahead of runner-up William Lanier who had a time of 19.11. Caleb Dudley finished third with a time of 19.26. Darby Futrell won the mile run at 7:07, with Devon Aldridge taking second with a time of 8:42. Kaliegh Jones finished third at 9:08.
