The Murray State Racers return home to the CFSB Center looking to respond from its first OVC loss Saturday. MSU hosts Eastern Illinois in a Wednesday matinee beginning at 1 p.m. The Racers are coming off a 72-54 loss Saturday at Tennessee Tech, snapping a three-game winning streak.
The Racers were unable to find an offensive rhythm in the loss as they recorded season-lows in points (54), field goal percentage (31.3 percent), 3-point percentage (15 percent) and 3-pointers made (3). Jasmine Borders led MSU with a season-high 17 points in the loss to the Golden Eagles and was the only Racer to make 3-point basket. Ke'Shunan James added 16 points while Kyra Gulledge had eight points and eight rebounds in the contest.
MSU is looking to extend its winning streak over the Panthers to three games after sweeping the season series last year, winning 66-56 in Murray and 74-71 in overtime up in Charleston, Ill. James averaged 20.5 points and four assists last season against EIU while Gulledge led the team with nine boards per game in the two contests.
In OVC play, the Racers have three players that rank in the top-15 in scoring average with James (19.7 ppg) ranking fourth, Borders (16) sixth and LeAsia Wright (14.3) 14th. MSU is the only team with three players that are in the top-15 in scoring during league play.
Eastern Illinois enters Wednesday's game looking for its first OVC road win. Grace Lennox's 15.1 points and 4.5 assists per game lead the Panthers this season. Lennox, who was named the OVC's Player of the Week on Tuesday, leads the league during conference-only play averaging 22.5 points per game.
EIU is very balanced throughout the rest of its lineup with three other players averaging in double figures. Erica Brown is second on the team at 11.7 points per game and leads the squad with 7.6 rebounds per contest. As a team, the Panthers are shooting 42.4 percent from the floor and 31 percent from 3-point range. EIU is coming off an 88-85 overtime loss at Eastern Kentucky on Saturday. The Panthers' lone OVC victory was also in overtime, a double-OT win over Jacksonville State, 71-67.
Wednesday's contest will be the last for the Racers before they hit the road for a three-game road trip. MSU will not return to "The Bank" until Jan. 28 when it hosts UT Martin.
