Potent Offense Leads to Victory Over Panthers
1/11/2017 4:05:00 PM | Women's Basketball
The Murray State offense was hitting on all cylinders Wednesday afternoon at the CFSB enter as the Racers defeated Eastern Illinois, 92-74. MSU recorded an assist on each of its first 14 made field goals of the contest and had a season-high 23 assists in the win. Coming into the day, the Racers were averaging 12 assists per game as a team.
Ke'Shunan James was just an assist shy of a triple-double in the victory as she scored 23 points, grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and had a career-best nine assists. Wednesday was James' second double-double of the year. LeAsia Wright led the Racers with 24 points on the day on 9-of-18 shooting and 4-for-9 from 3-point range. Wright also recorded a game-high four steals. With James and Wright both going over 20 points, it marks the sixth time this season that a pair of Racers have scored 20 or more in the same game.
Bria Bethea added 16 points off the bench in the win, recorded a career-high five assists and a pair of steals while Abria Gulledge chipped in with 13 points and hit a trio of 3-pointers. Kyra Gulledge had a solid all-around performance as she scored eight points, grabbed eight rebounds and had a season-high four assists.
MSU (11-6, 3-1 OVC) led for most of the contest as EIU's last lead of the game came with 2:28 left in the first quarter at 17-16. The Racers proceeded to score the next nine points to overtake the lead for good and led 28-22 after one. In the second quarter, the Racers led by as many as 14 points and carried a 45-33 lead into the locker room.
In the second stanza, the Racers continued to extend their lead and were up by as many as 19 points on two separate occasions. However, the Panthers (5-12, 1-4 OVC) would not go away quietly and made a fourth quarter run, cutting the MSU lead down to 77-68 with five minutes left to play. James and Wright took care of business from there, scoring the next seven points to push the lead back out, and six free throws the final 1:33 of the game salted the contest away for the Racers.
The Racers shot 47.8 percent for the game while EIU shot 42.6 percent. MSU also made twice as many (10-5) 3-pointers as the Panthers and held a 40-30 advantage in points in the paint. The Racers had a great day at the free-throw line, going 18-of-21 (85.7 percent) from the stripe while the Panthers were 17-fo-27 (63 percent).
MSU also held a big advantage defensively, forcing the Panthers into 20 turnovers, leading to 29 points. Meanwhile EIU scored 14 points off 13 MSU turnovers. The Racer bench also tallied a 24-13 edge in the win.
The Racers will now hit the road for the next three games beginning Sunday at noon at SIU Edwardsville. Sunday's contest will be broadcast on the American Sports Network (ASN).
