The Murray State women's basketball team hits the road Sunday to Edwardsville, Ill., for the first of three consecutive road contests for the Racers. Tip-off between MSU and SIU Edwardsville is set for noon and will be broadcast live on the American Sports Network (ASN). Dave Armstrong will be providing play-by-play, while Rich Zvosec will be the analyst.
The Racers are coming off a 92-74 victory over Eastern Illinois on Wednesday at the CFSB Center. MSU recorded an assist on each of its first 14 made field goals in the win and tied a season-high with 23 assists against the Panthers. Coming into the game, MSU was averaging 12 assists per game on the season.
Ke'Shunan James was just an assist shy of a triple-double on the day as she scored 23 points, grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and had a career-best nine assists. It was James' second double-double of the season. LeAsia Wright led the Racers with 24 points in the win on 9-of-18 shooting and four made 3-pointers. It marked the sixth time this season that a pair of Racers have gone for 20 or more points in the same game and the fifth time this season that James and Wright have accomplished the feat in the same game.
James and Wright rank third and sixth, respectively during OVC play in scoring average entering Sunday's contest. James is averaging 20.5 points per game while Wright is scoring at a 16.8 clip. Jasmine Borders ranks seventh with 16 points per game in one fewer conference game played.
MSU looks for its second consecutive victory at SIUE after defeating the Cougars 79-76 last season at the Vadalabene Center. Last year's win was just the second all-time for the Racers at SIUE. Donshel Beck's 14 points and 6.9 rebounds per game lead the Cougars this season while Lauren White and Gwen Adams are the other two Cougars averaging in double figures on the year, with 11.7 and 11 points per game, respectively. White is the only player that has started all 17 games this year for SIUE. As a team, the Cougars are averaging 66 points per game and nearly 63 points per during conference play and are allowing 74 and 69.5, respectively on defense. SIUE shoots the ball extremely well from 3-point range, ranking second in the league at a 36.4 percent clip.
