Saturday will be the regular season finale for the Murray State women's basketball team as the Racers travel to face UT Martin in a 4 p.m., contest at the Elam Center in Martin. The contest is pivotal for OVC Tournament standings as MSU is currently in a five-way tie for fourth in the league standings. The Racers, UTM, Austin Peay, Southeast Missouri and Tennessee Tech are all 7-8 entering the final day of the regular season.
The Racers are coming off an 80-67 defeat to SEMO on Wednesday at the CFSB Center on Senior Night. Ke'Shunan James recorded a career-high 35 points in the loss on 12-of-21 shooting and also hit three 3-pointers. Bria Bethea added 19 points while Kyra Gulledge tied a season-high with 13 rebounds.
James' 565 points this season are tied for the eighth-most in a single season in program history along with Joi Scott (2006-07). James is just two points shy of Amber Guffey's (2007-08) seventh-best mark of 567 points and five away from Jennifer Parker who scored 570 in the 1993-94 season. James is currently averaging an OVC-leading 20.2 points per game this season, a mark that ranks ninth in program history in single-season scoring average.
The defending OVC regular season champion-Skyhawks have won 6-of-8 the last month to get themselves back in the OVC Tournament hunt. Freshman Kendall Spray's 12.8 points per game lead UT Martin. The Skyhawks are very balanced offensively as three other players average in double figures. Myah Taylor is second on the team at 12.6 points per game and primarily comes off the bench. Ashton Feldhaus and Emanye Robertson are third and fourth, respectively on the team in scoring at 11.3 and 10.5 points per game, respectively. As a team, the Skyhawks are shooting 41.7 percent from the floor, 35.6 percent from 3-point range and 74.7 percent at the free-throw line.
A win Saturday would clinch a spot in the OVC Tournament for the Racers while a loss may knock them out of postseason contention. If the Racers get the seventh or eighth seed in the tournament, they will play Wednesday in Nashville. A 3-6 seed would mean MSU plays Thursday in the first round.
